Just got through jammin to this one:

I love to discover all kinds of styles ther is in latino/salsamusic. I know a song called Charanga - but I cannot say I can identify whats typical for charanga music. I need more examples.

Hi Lucretia. :) It's not a live link so you will have to insert WWW. at the beginning. I just tested it again. Should work. :D The main identifiers in Charanga is the string instruments at the forefront of the music. Good to "see" you! :)
 
I have another recomendation, just that i'm not sure if it's exactly caharanga. The cuban band "la original de Manzanillo" have a really good music. You can hear their music in here:

You know, I didn't realize I had Estrellas Caiman's song "El Verdadero Son"! I love this song! I went to research the artist further and found that the whole CD Descarga Brava 2000! (which includes the song previously mentioned) is just awesome. Very good grooving Charanga selection. Take a listen at Latincoolnow.com :banana:

Yeah, I do. Listen to Los Zafiros' "La caminadora," "Rumba como quiera," and compare the similarities between Guaracha from Sonora Matancera. One may be faster that the other, but concentrate on the beats. You'll see.

I thought we discussed the artist before in another thread but couldn't find it in my SF search. I just stumbled across this one tonight in internet salsa travels. :)

SonSublime is a Cuban Charanga orchestra based in the New York City area, playing the classic styles of Danzón, Cha-Cha-Cha and Son. SonSublime embraces these classic styles and enhances them with a fresh, energetic sound adored by young and mature dancers alike.

A musical inovation from the fifties-- primarily brass replaced by string instruments and flute. J. Pacheco has some fine examples.

This is the man who wrote for H. Lavoe. and C. Cruz and co founded the Fania lable , and was its musical director .

He was at the forefront of the Latin explosion in the seventies and was largely responsible for the musical changes from mambo to salsa.

He has recorded many albums in the Charanga style, he is by the way, a Dominicano .
 
Hey, I danced to charanga for the first time last night. There was a Cuban band called YeraSon playing at one of my favorite salsa hideouts. Had heard charanga before and liked it, but never seen the dance. Turns out it's quite bouncy and folk-ish, nothing at all like typical NY mambo. I had a bit of trouble squashing my anti-bounce training but the dance was a lot of fun. :)

Never really thought about it before frankly, never having had to dance to it; but everyone was out there bouncing away. Actually my leader had to remind me to keep the bounce as I'm still sort of a Janie One-Note wrt salsa. :( I'd like to get exposed to some more of the different styles of dance out there, as the NYon2 scene seems married to a small subset of songs that work well for fast slotted mambo.

This was a pretty different bunch than the typical NY on-2 crowd; lots of older Hispanic people. Different vibe. I liked it.
 
Okay. Sounds like you had a fantastic time. Are you sure it wasn't Pachanga instead of Charanga? Pachanga tends to have the bouncy feel or even something close to a fast cha cha. Charanga is smoother. Good example of Charanga is:

Dunno; but YeraSon bill themselves as a charanga band, and the strings were very prominent.

The music sounds folky, with a strong violin line up front. They actually played a mix of different styles; but as I said I did have to be 'subtly reminded' to change my dance style as appropriate - i.e., the leader said, "it's charanga, you gotta bounce to it." :D

AFAIK pachanga sounds a little more carnivally (sort of pinball-machiney) than charanga, no? - but I'm no expert.

The dance was not a frenetic bounce or even as rapid as the cha-cha; it was really more of a light, supple flex in the knee.

Oh okay. When you mentioned 'bouncy', that threw me off completely. Yeah, pachanga is definitely quite lively. Charanga = bounce Hmm. just doesn't fit into the bouncy category accoring to my ear so that's why maybe I thought you meant Pachanga instead. :)

for a good charanga: I randomly picked up a cd from the library (i know, it's kinda old school to do something like that!) of Orquesta Aragon, and there are a variety of songs---chachacha, charanga, boleros on the cd, and all a great.

Like so many terms (clave, conga, tumbao, mambo) , charanga has a few meanings - as well as a style of music it's a name for a particular line-up of instruments.
