About travelling in London

If I take the train from Colchester to some salsa venue in London...do I have to buy a ticket for the underground in London as well? Or is that included.

(where I live we pay per zones ...a very easy way to travel :))

Any one who knows?

Hopefully someone who lives in London can help you out here a bit, but here's what I would do.

The tube in London is organised into zones. The central zone is zone 1, then bigger "circles" around that are numbered 2,3,4 etc. I would expect most of the venues to be in zone 1, maybe 2.

I know I can buy a day (24h) return to London which includes day travel (again, I think that is 24h) in zone 1, or zone 1,2, or zone 1,2,3,4,5,6. It usually works out cheaper that way for me.

But I'm sure we have experts that travel into London all the time on here :)

If you only plan to travel to and from Colchester a simple return ticket is what you want.

If you want to travel in London you definitely want a London travel card included in the ticket you buy at Colchester. This will allow you to use all forms of public transport for the entire day (and the night bus services, early in the morning of the following day).

The Mayor of London has made buying single tickets for buses and tubes VERY expensive. It costs something like £4 for a single journey on the Tube and £2 for a journey on the bus. A one day zone 1-6 travel card will cost about £6 - so you're in credit if you know you'll be doing more than one tube journey.

The other thing to remember is that cheap travelcards aren't valid until after 9:30am (they are off peak tickets). You can get a peak travel card, but these cost about £8-£9.

If you are definitely travelling into London every day of the week, the cheapest way to do it would be to buy a weekly Colchester to London season ticket, with a zone 1 (the central part of London) travel card included - you'll possibly need a passport photo so they can issue this type of ticket. A total guess, but I imagine such a ticket would cost £80-£100. A lot of money, but if you are doing the journey every day you save in the long run.

If you need any more info on prices, ask away and I'll get back to you tomorrow.

Sorry I,m late on this post, but for future travellers.-- travel agents sell Brit rail passes with various options -- They CANNOT- be bought in the u.k. but tend to cover city to city travel .
