UK - London Salsa Clubs

Hi Guys,...someone can help me. At end of Apri I visit for a week end London.
Which Salsa Clubs I can visit on Friday and Saturday?

Hi Mircop and welcome to Salsa Forums. I am in London.

As Peach mentioned, on the Annual Salsa Congresses & Events thread, there is a Salsa Congress in London on the last weekend in April. That is the good news. The bad news is that the organisers will not be selling tickets for the evening parties separately. This means that you would have to buy a day pass.

Do you know as yet where in London you will be staying? If you can tell me the area, I may then be able to advise you better on places/events that would be easier for you to get to and from. Unless your budget stretches to take taxis, transport in London after say 12.30am is not great, therefore if there are good places close to where you are staying, I would like to suggest those... rather than sending you to the other side of London!

Have you been to London before? What style of salsa do you dance ie. crossbody or cuban? There are one or two places that are better than others if you dance cuban more than crossbody, and vice versa.

You said you were coming end of April? Do you have more specific dates in mind? Is it the last weekend in April (when the London Congress is on) or the weekend before that?

Great

hi Pacion!!!
I m there at 29/30 april and 1 may.

I m dancing CrossBody style.

I m placend in a hotel in Oxford Street.

That's all!

I leave to my Personal London Guide ( you ) a suggestion...
:D

If you dance cross-body style on 1, in my opinion these are the best places in London:

Monday: Salsa! in Charing Cross Rd. (good class for moves and routines)
Tuesday: Latin Quarter - excellent class at 18h30, no club. (excellent class on techniques, styling, interpretation).
Tuesday: Sound at Leicester Square from 22h00 onwards - nice club!
Wednesday: Jongleurs at Bow Warf (excellent class on techniques, styling, interpretation).
Thursday: My Place in Earls Court. (good class for moves and routines)
Friday: Ealing Town Hall (fast pace class, sociable dancing afterwards, smoke-free venue!!)
Saturday: No good class class that I know about, Colluseum in Vauxhall (Rueda class, buit its far) or Ronnie Scotts in Frith Street (very central, starts late, carries on late) - so do both!!.
Sunday: SOS near Euston station )good class for moves & routines) or Fiesta Havana (very nice club!) near Oxford Circus.

Fiesta Havana depends on the night... not predictable, but nice venue, and some nights excellent dancing and interesting crowd!!

Most of these are classes and club, except Tuesday as indicated.

Have fun!
You have so many cloices in London!

Thanks Mircop. Will come back to you - have to check some things. m1ckey's list is very good except I will have to "dispute" with his/her suggestions for Saturday :( Ronnie Scott's is very touristic and Coliseum is variable, from what I understand ie. not every Saturday.

Friday 29 April - Yes, Ealing Town Hall is good BUT (!!!) I am not sure if it will take place on Friday 29th April. The organisers, MamboCity, are the same ones who are putting on the London Salsa Congress and based on past events, Ealing Town Hall was cancelled as they were at the venue for the London Salsa Congress. The promoter, Robert White, is also the main DJ at Ealing Town Hall therefore unless they do something different this time round, I believe Ealing Town Hall will be cancelled just for that Friday.

Saturday 30 April - will have to come back to you with suggestions.

I agree with SOS. It should be taking place as usual, based on past events, when the London Salsa Congress was on. Fiesta Havana... a new Cuban night has been organised, I believe for the last Sunday in each month. Nice/Interesting venue with a silly door policy... (you have to queue)... but I am not sure if this happens on the Sunday salsa night as this is something that started up about a month ago and I have not been able to go as yet. (If m1ckey says it is salsa, I will go along with that. From recollection, it used to be a brazilian night (about a year ago?) - according to a friend of mine who went on Sundays...)

Hi Pacion,

Let me qualify my post! I'm not from London but go there frequently and then I try and cram in as much "good" salsa as I can. :D So it's sort-of one traveller's info to another!

Saturday nights are still the night I haven't found the "perfect" class/club. I've only been to Colloseum once, last time I was there (2 weeks ago) - it's a mission to get there, did the Rueda class just for fun 'cause I was there, but had some very enjoyable social dancing afterwards... same with Ronnie Scotts, went there after Colloseum (closer to hotel and on night bus route after tube-time than the Colloseum - important consideration for the traveller!) and again had some nice social dances! Both these places, maybe it was just lucky that I had a nice evening... maybe I ran into some nice dancers by chance... maybe I was just in a good mood :P, so can't really vouch for them generally. I know you are 100% right about Colloseum - it's not always on.

As for Salsa! Latin Quarter, Sound, My Place, Jongleurs, Ealing - been quite a few times, same good experience!

As for Fiesta Havana, it depends on the luck of the draw the night. I phoned before I went last time, and they said Sunday was primarily salsa. I've been there on a Thursday that was good, and other times you go and its too crowded or its very Brazilian samba music; but I've also been on a Brazilian night (e.g. Monday) where later on it was very nice! The nice thing about Havana is it stays open quite late and is close to night busses to about anywhere, and, well, I just seem to like the place :D But I must add - I normally go there very late; then they play more salsa and it is not that crowded so you can play a bit with steps and stuff on the music...

Just to put things in perspective! But again, there is so much Salsa in London, you definitely do not have to sit still any night of the week! Like Bar Cuda in High St Kensington also used to be fun on Wednesdays (and easy to get to), but I haven't been since I discovered Jonleurs in Bow Wharf (which is a bit of a mission to get to). But once you've worked out the times, the tubes, the buses, it's all well worth it!!

Since it's a big congress weekend, there's a good chance that the majority of good/serious dancers will be there (especially on Saturday since there are no good alternatives), leaving regular clubs quieter than usual... A day pass for Saturday may be worth considering.

I went to Ronnie Scott's on a Saturday once and had a great time, but that was mainly because there weren't many other followers above the beginners level that night, which made me very popular .

I think so too, Mac. It would be totally worth the $$. :)

Getting to and from the venue will also need consideration though. During the day, shouldn't be a problem (Piccadilly tube line) but at night, it would be a problem, unless you manage to connect with the night buses which could take ages, or you stay awake until the underground starts running again (about 6/7am). The venue itself for the congress is very nice (MacMoto can tell you ;) ) but unless you drive, may be a bit tricky to get back to your hotel on Oxford Street afterwards.

Mircop, will you be coming with friends? If you are, maybe a shared taxi back may be an option? Some private taxi hire companies may do a fare for about £26-£30.

I got a call from a friend to say that they were going to Fiesta Havana last Friday night so I decided to do some "field work".

It was hot (as in temperature, not vibe :? ), crowded, there were people standing and drinking or just standing on the dancefloor  the music was as I thought, very mixed - salsa, merengue, cumbia, latin pop.

Probably not the place to be on a Friday night for serious salsa dancing.

Hi Mircop

Just to let you know that I have not forgotten you. Still trying to find out what is happening on the weekend you will be here.

hi mircop,

if you're around on the sunday night the latin collective are doing one of their famous all nighters at scala near kings cross - starts at 9.30 runs through till 6am with 4 rooms encompassing different types of salsa as well as lambada incl. shows - they are amazing and attract everyone ;)

there is a similar big salsa and lambada event at the colosseum in vauxhall that saturday (is done every last saturday of the month) - i went to the last one and it was really good :)

will keep u posted as i hear more about events - as people have mentioned before there is the congress on that weekend so might be a little quieter in london...

I'm not a Londoner - but I have to recommend Latin Collective. They where having a salsaweekend where I live. Great dancers, great shows and great teachers. The best I ever seen!

News Flash! It seems there will be a limited number of evening passes available for the parties at the 5 Star Salsa Congress. I received an email from the organiser but it did not seem to have the price.

Re Scala, I hear some people like it, some people don't.

Mircop, will you be bringing a mobile with you? I will be around that weekend. I haven't decided whether I will go to the Congress or not (and may be driving - have to check with a friend) but at the very least, can do a coffee :D ...
