The easiest way for new listeners, I feel, are compilation CDs at first. Particularly the ones with classics (70s) up to present day. The more variety, the better. It also trains the ear so to speak in the many facets of Salsa or just has all your favorites one CD, if you can find a good one. :D You can also do a search on these at music stores online such as amazon.com, circuitcity.com, descarga.com or take a listen to one of the stream radio stations like batanga.com. If you find any good compilations, please add them. :D

Ay Que Ryko Latino!
Rykodisc label's roster of Latin-music acts who mix modern salsa with firm groundings in tradition. Artists present include Cubanismo, Plena Libre, Jose Alberto, Jimmy Bosch, and Truco; it's a great introduction to an exciting assortment of musicians. The Artwork threw me off on the CD. I was thinking it was again another rip-off CD with unknown artists but to my surprise, it's a nice CD. Love it. Get's you dancing right away.

2 El Paso de Encarnacion by Cubanismo

The Very Best of Salsa

I don't know all this material, but it looks really good. It brings together classic 70s/Fania era salsa; some of the better salsa romantica/poppier things; Colombian salsa; and current New York salsa dura artists. (It even picks out the one Jimmy Bosch song I really like.)

Estoy Como Nunca (4.53) - Tito Allen

Peach, some of the songs on that Fania compilation seem to me like they'd be better to listen to than dance to ("Quitate Tu," "Periodico de Ayer," and "Anacaona," for instance).

This one looks good to me:

The Gringo Guide to Salsa

1. Bailando / Frankie Ruiz
2. La Vida Es un Carnaval / Celia Cruz (Live )
3. Fuego a la Jicotea / Marvin Santiago
4. A la Hora Que Me Llamen Voy / Jose "El Canario" Alberto
5. Me Voy Pa' Cali / Oscar D'Leon
6. La Sandunguita / Issac Delgado
7. Salsumba / Domingo Quiñones
8. No Vale la Pena / Johnny Rivera
9. Cuando Se Canta Bonito / Willie Rosario
10. Richie's Jala Jala / Richie Ray (Live)
11. Como el Morivivi / Raphy Leavitt
12. La Cosa No Es Como Antes / Ismael Miranda (Live)

Para Ochun by Hector Lavoe is very slow but I love dancing to it. Fuego A La Jicotea is a great party starter or booster song. Becoming a standard on the more recent compilations. :D

I just purchased Salsa Creole, finally!!!

I really like this compilation of Afro-Cuban music. It really isn't an all Salsa CD however. Only half the songs are Salsa. My favorites are Manman Dada by Haitiando; Beautiful Bolero that explodes into Son and the intoxicating live version of Carretero by Malavoi; Really love this one. A couple of nice Latin Jazz tunes: Afro Blue (Henri Guedon) and Andelate (Mario Cononge). One Merengue  Not sure why. One Cha Cha that reminds you of Tito Puente. A Zouk Salsa which is not bad. A very French Salsa (Merci la Vie) that I don't really care for BUT can tolerate and one Bolero.

Overall, a very good CD. Just don't be fooled by the label Salsa Creole: Afro-Cuban Salsa Music. :D It should read Half Salsa Creole/Half "Other" Music. :D

I already have three Frankie Ruiz compilations, so if I buy any more Frankie Ruiz CDs, it will be actual albums (not that you were talking to me or anything).
