For your rueda group, how many of you are the actual "caller". How many moves come to mind once you get started? Do you find it difficult and rather have someone else do it?

There is only 1 caller in a single couple. i keep my mind clear, and when I recognize it I do it, yeah... it gets difficult in the really really fast songs like the ones I danced yesterday :)

There is only 1 caller in a single couple. Oh, I know. :D Looks like my question didn't come out right. Let me rephrase that. Are you the caller of the group or is someone else?

I learned Montana and Dedo yesterday! its lots of fun! :)

I think Dedo has to be one of my favorites. The coolest thing about that is it's a prelude to hand flicks. When the lead's brings the follow's hand down, instead of carrying it back up, he can just flick the follows hand up. Pretty cool.

its a mixture of medio sombrero, and 2 enchuflas with one hand with one ronde in between :)

Yup me! I love it and get very despondant if i don't get my weekly Rueda fix. In fact I'm trying a new club night tonight that's being run / taught by the guy that normally calls our Rueda just to see if I can get my Rueda happy a few days early.

I have tried calling Rueda before now and I found my mind kept going blank - but I guess it gets easier with practice just like anything else.

I tried Rueda Casino for the first time on my night out with Prae on thursday (I did the introduction to- class) and I have to say Its brill. Its like doing the electric slide at a wedding-tons of fun. Obviously not something you can do all night but definately a floor filler. Im absolutely up for more!

Yeah, now that I have gotten better at following, I would love to just jump right into a Rueda group, especially now. I remember when I first started, I used to love moves like Montana, Beso, Condado, Sombero.....

went to a new place last night. went early thinking i'd do the improver class as a boy before the intermediate / advanced one..however there weren't any improver dancers there so ended up with a 2 hour class. second part of which was Rueda as hoped. it was excellent. Learnt about 4 new moves and then danced about 3 ruedas after the class. One with just my friends calling the moves ourselves. I have a little rueda happy feeling about me this morning.

I like Rueda, there isn't a regular class to go to where I am, but we've had Moe Flex as a guest teacher a few times. His lessons are fantastic even when we made mistakes he'd just make us laugh and I don't think he has an un-enthusiastic bone in his body! So my experience of Rueda has had a really positive beginning :D

Class last night was with Moe. He's teaching at the UK congress too. I love him. I'm so lucky to be able totake classes with him every week.

Cool thread. Any promotion of Casino or Rueda de Casino is great in my mind.

As to "is La Rueda and Casino different?" Yes...Rueda refers to a wheel. Casino refers to the style of motions used in the wheel. You can have a Rueda de L.A. Style Salsa; Rueda de Bachata; Rueda de ChaChaCha - you get my point.

Casino is its own style of Salsa that's out of Cuba. However, I've noticed now that folks say Rueda and/or Casino and mean the same thing.

Here's a link to an article that I wrote that talks about this misperception: http://www.muchoswing.com/MS_SB20060907.html These are my just my thoughts.

Thanks,

Thanks for posting the link to the article, Simona. :)

When I ask Casineros why they don't attend or don't teach at Salsa congresses or events, many say it's because "they don't like us." That's not true. Sure, there's a few who are ignorant, but many of the event organizers are thrilled to introduce this style to their community. Yes - you do have to explain the difference between Rueda de Casino and Casino Salsa.

Any Miami natives and/or Casineros) in the SF house? What are your thoughts on this?

By the way, Casino/Rueda de Casino is quite popular in Florida, more particularly in Miami.

Our group LOVE rueda!!! It gives everyone such a buzz!!! My only health warning is that if you don't know what to do, maybe don't assume because you can follow that you can jump on in. It's a fast dance and if you're in the wrong place you can get trampled!!! And guys who aren't sure what to do can cause serious damage... I had to have three months of physio after a guy spun round and planted his elbow into my shoulder joint!!! But I still love it - have to have my weekly fix!!

Recently tried two couple rueda - HUGE fun and gets you thinking. A simple move like "ocho" (figure of eight - apologies if I've spelt it wrong or you know it as something else!!!) becomes very difficult!!!

I've been dancing rueda for nine months now, and it has really improved my one-on-one partnered salsa. As a leader, I found that rueda has expanded my repetoire of moves that are fun, easily recalled and leadable on the dance floor.

Before rueda, I learned numerous combinations at the many classes I've taken over two years since I started salsa. But I can honestly say that I've forgotten more combinations than I remember! With rueda, it's totally different. By sheer repetition the moves are ingrained into my muscle memory. And since many moves are built on others, I understand the common threads that allow for variation and play during one-on-one dancing.

Of course, dancing as a group has such a great vibe, and I've met so many new people. In a way, rueda is a great equalizer, bringing different levels of dancers together overcoming the usual hierarchy that exists. I have almost as much fun taking it easy dancing in circles with beginners as I do facing the challenge of trying to keep up with advanced casineros.

For those folks on the west coast that can't make it to Miami for their Rueda congress...there's a smaller congress in Palm Springs.

This new year's the Salsa Extravaganza at the Doral Springs Resort will have a section devoted to Rueda de Casino and Cuban Casino Salsa. Mike and I will be there teaching workshops, and we're confirming with a few other Casino instructors to see if they will be there as well.

Soooo...all of you Casino addicts, come join us on New Year's!

Here's the event info...www.salsaextravaganza.com. The casino portion is not up yet, but it should be shortly.

Oh boy do I have an idea! A few months ago, I screwed that move up precisely in a two-couple rueda. I was going left when I should've been going right. It was awful (but we laughed and laughed because it was to be expected).

Hey folks,
Another great Cuban Dance/Casino/Rueda de Casino event..."Cuba Baila!"

April 14 - 16, 2007 in Vancouver, BC, Canada!

Our group went to this event last year, and it was simply amazing. Tons of fun, tons of dancing, tons of great workshops, and tons of wonderful performances.

For more information on the event - go to dancerueda.com.

This makes three main events in the U.S. for Cuban Casino Salsa (Miami - October; Palm Springs - December; and Vancouver BC - April)

Any others?
