Hello guys and girls,
An interesting thought, which continues along from a conversation I was having last Saturday with a friend, the thread "Why No One Can Touch Frankie Martinez", and a conversation I was having with a long term salsero in the UK.
I believe that anyone can get as good as they want to in something. It is just a matter of a few things - intention & belief in themselves, dedication, openness to other peoples views and looking after themselves.
You have to look after yourself, otherwise even if you have the time you won't be in shape to do what you have a burning desire to do. You need to be open to other views - everyone needs encouragement, advice and guidance now again - if you are closed to these you're going to hit a problem which you can't solve (possibly because your ego won't accept advice). Dedication is sooo important. If you don't dedicate time to something, you won't develop. The classic "10 years" number get's banded around - stick with something for at least 10 years before you get to the level of "mastery". Dedication is what keeps you going when you get stuck, what gets you out of bed, what gets you to work on what you need to work on.
But none of these are useful without belief & intention. Belief in your abilties and knowing you have what it takes to get where you intend to go. I know most people have limiting beliefs when it comes to various things. They may have the intent to become a CEO, but not believe that they have the decision making skills. They may wish to become a millionaire, but believe that they will never make it because it's a hard thing to do.
I would like to be as good as Frankie Martinez.
I know this is possible. Infact I know that if I really wanted to be better than Frankie, I could. I know it will take a LOT of time and dedication to get that good, but at the moment I think it is possible.
The limiting beliefs I have are not having enough time to do that. All I need is time, and I have lots of other activities that I am dedicated to, which takes up time. But I am patient and I'm in this for the long haul. Salsa will be "who I am" in 2 years time, and I know in 2-3 years time I will be getting pretty good.
So, how good do you want to get?
Do you believe that you will get that good?
If not, what beliefs do you have that will stop you from getting that good?
Can you be sure about those beliefs? If you can, what can you do to minimise the chance of them limiting your potential?
Hey - it's the right time of the year to get deep and set some goals right? The new year is less than two weeks away! I will definately be spending a few hours this holiday looking over my medium term goals I've written in my journal!
Take it easy,
Swannie
