How often does your studio have socials? Just curious. For alot of people, that seems to be the only time they would actually go out to dance. Maybe not into the local scene in their area. There is a school here that has them here every week but they teach a variety of dances so if you're a Salsa nut like myself, you may only get two dances in. Bummer. Is it the norm for the strictly Salsa schools to have them once a month? Do you think that's enough or would rather go to the local clubs instead?

where i am (in singapore).. there's a local studio that opens up their largest room for social nights every friday evening for about 2hrs after the last class. they play mostly salsa and other latin music cuz it's a Latin Fiesta nite. i reckon it's a great idea that the dance studios organises such sessions.

What do you understand by socials? A party organised by a certain studio? My school does that every Wednesday, from 8:30 PM till around 12 AM.

...A party organised by a certain studio?..
Right, that's what I mean. :)
hi, I'm from Sofia, Bulgaria
If you mean a party organized by a certain school (studio) in some club (not in the dancing room of the school) every school here has such at least once a week. Since you can freely go to the parties of other schools, there are "socials" actually every day. They usually start after 10-11 pm and continue until 2-4 AM.
Because of the late hour in which normally to to happen, only instructors that teach in clubs organize parties where they teach, which is particularly the same.

the only one that I heard of was the holiday party that happened in December of 04, and I hadn't started dancing back then :?

Hi suet! Welcome to the Salsa forums!
I shall be at the Congress in Sofia, Bulgaria on 3-5 June.
Will you be there? I would love to meet you!
Hi Squirrel,
Nice to meet you too. I think I will be able to attend only the parties in the nights. Unfortunately I don't think I'll visit any workshops, which is really pity since there will be great international instructors there. We can meet at the parties.
My nick is seut, btw :)

well well well. our studio (which is actually the only one in Minsk that can be called as a proper salsa studio) organizes socials every week. Fortunately we managed to arrange it in one of the popular spots of Minsk. Actually it's the only opportunity for us to dance somewhere beyond the ballroom :( as there are no latin night clubs (hopefully it will happen one day- we're really doing our best to shake this tolerant Belarusian society into the rythm of salsa :-) hard but there's nothing impossible for true salsa lovers).

Our studio (Salsa Heat) has two socials every month. One really big one (on a Saturday night at a large dance hall) and one smaller one (at the studio) on a Sunday afternoon/early evening. They are both alot of fun. There are a couple of other places that do socials in our area too from time to time as well.
I think because Orlando (Florida) has a good number of latin nights it is harder to successfully put on lots of big socials. Every once in a while, alot of us will travel to some of the other larger cities for socials as well (Tampa, Miami, etc.).
If you are ever in the Central Florida area during the right time, check them out. The website is http://www.salsaorlando.com

Many of the salsa teachers and studios here in LA have socials on a weekly or monthly basis. At some I have had a great time dancing in a friendly setting. At others, they play more ballroom music so for a salsa buff, there is very little music to dance to. At most socials, there is a large amount of beginners, if you are an experienced dancer, be prepared to spend most of your time teaching. Unless you can squeeze some dancing in with the instructor.
