Does anyone know what the salsa dance scene is like in Paris, France.
I'm toying with the idea of going back but this time purely for Salsa.

-What style of salsa do Parisiens dance? I heard on 1 and on 3.
Is that right? Do they have such a different style that I'd sit all night like what I read about Miami in the past?

-Is there anything else I should know about how they dance salsa there
that I could adjust myself to/practice up on before going.

-How is the salsa crowd in Paris? ( friendly, not )

-Is there anything else I should know about the salsa scene in Paris?

I havn't been to Paris for quite a few years, and the last time I was there, I didn't go salsa dancing  .........

From what I hear (a visiting salsera from Paris) they dance mainly on2, both Palladium/Power/PR on2, as well as ET/NY on2.

Another DF member said that it's BOTH on1/on3 (I'm putting them together because the difference is minimal/adjustable) and on2.

Appearantly Cuban/casino style is alive too (which I'd say is the main one in Miami, plz correct me if I'm wrong).....

I should really think about going to Paris again, as I have relatives there, and my friend is going back in a few weeks  ........

Ok. Then sounds like I should start put some on 3 into my repretoire since that's the one I haven't done before because no one dances it that I know of in my area. I'll see if I can find someone.

Thanks PE and SC.

Anyone else have any other info on the Paris Salsa Scene/Paris Congresses??

Hi Artysalsera !

I don’t know if I am too late to give you a few answers to your Parisian salsa questions but It should still interest some.

I am French and live in Paris, so I hope I am able to give you good tips.

I truly think that going to Paris purely for salsa is an excellent spot, across Europe, we are quite a good place to practice.

About the style, you can find all kind of salsa dancing. But if we talk about the global public, portorican salsa on 1 is the mainly danced (forget about the 3, it’s not that much practiced), followed by Cuban style.
If we talk specifically about “good dancers” and professionals, then both portorican on 1 and on 2 (palladium and NY) are equally danced.

Don’t worry about the style and / or not being invited. I think French salseros have their own specificities, but as everywhere else in the world. Each place just develop something salsa their way. But the basic following and guiding is the same everywhere, so no problems to connect.
About being invited, I would tell you 2 things :
- don’t worry, you will be invited during the night anyway !
- but, I must admit that you shouldn’t expect good dancers to do so. I’m hearing you from France, don’t get nervous, I explain !
Good dancers mostly won’t invite you, because they don’t know you and moreover have never seen you before. Salsa scene in Paris is huge, but considering the hardcore of passionate salseros, we all know each other, at least by view. So, from that, we already have a lot of good partners to dance with, which doesn’t incite to invite an unknown person (which, in this case, implies that it is, in the best option, a non Parisian salsero, or, more frequently, a neophyte).

Anyway, NEVER HESITATE TO INVITE good dancers, you will NEVER be refused a dance, and it is the way to make yourself seen and recognised as a salsera.

To finish on that point, I must say salsa crowd in Paris is globally very warm and friendly. You will have an excellent time dancing here and meet very nice people.

If you ever want a contact in Paris, just email me (or any other interested international salseros), and I’ll try to welcome you as I can. (s.maietti@essca.asso.fr)

About clubs, here the list of my favourites (I mostly dance on 2 palladium, and PR on 1, so goes the musical playlist of these clubs) :

- La Coupole > Tuesday from 9.30 to 4am
100/102 Boulevard du Montparnasse, 75014 Paris, Station : Vavin (Subway number 13)

- Les Etoiles > Friday from 10 to 2 am
Rue du Château d’eau, Station : Château d’Eau (Subway n° 4)
# attention : this club is usually excellent but I would advise you not to go there on your own, this is a place only for dancers as the place is really not nice to stay (old place, kind of cold). Consequently, mainly proper dancers go there and so you will certainly have to invite first to be introduced. But don’t care, people are really nice.#

- Le Barrio Latino > Sunday from 3pm to 7.30pm
Rue du Faubourg Saint Antoine, Station : Bastille (Subway n°1, 5 or 8)

These 3 places are, for me, the best weekly spots. You have a lot of others places to dance for every evening (some are very good), just check www.salsafrance.com.

Other places I would highly recommend but not weekly are :

- Salsa Nights at the O’Sullivan pub, on Sunday, every 2 weeks (excellent), from 9.30 to 2am.
Boulevard de Clichy, Next to The Moulin Rouge, Station : Blanche (subway N° 2)

- Salsa Nights at the ENST, one Saturday a month
Rue Vergniaud, Station : Glacière (Subway N°6), from 9.30 to 5am

I hope I have helped you in your French salsa research. Don’t hesitate to contact me for further information as this is only the essential information.

About the Congress, I do think It is worth coming and experience it. This year it will be held the 9/10/11th of June if I remember it well. Just go and check on www.salsabor.fr or email me for précised information.

See you and enjoy. :D :D :D

Hi everybody,

To complete the subject about "Where to dance in Paris", (as the places given for the moment are more LA / PR "salsa portoricaine" Style) here are my favorites places (I'm a cuban style dancer):

LE DIABLITO
45 Rue St Sébastien 75011 Paris
Métro/Subway : Saint Ambroise or Richard Lenoir
Good days => on thursday (cuban music) / Wednesday (mix Cuban + other style) / Friday.
This is the place to go for the moment

La Pachanga
8 r Vandamme 75014 Paris
Métro/ Subway : Gaité or Edgard Quinet
=> Monday and thursday

Moving de Thiais (ONLY if you have a car)
3, rue des Alouettes - 94320 Thiais
=> saturday (all sort of salsa music)

There is lot of salsa club in Paris, and each has his style, moreover some clubs change there programmation each day, so just take care of what style you want to dance to go to the right place.

As frenchsalsera said French Salseros never refuse a dance (I never do :D ).

Hope this will help (and also that you understood my english, I need practice (sorry... :? )) ;)

ArtsySalsera, if you enjoy on1 style, I would definitely recommend you La Pachanga, because it is the friendliest place I've ever seen in Paris. I've been there with a ballroom dancer (i.e. she couldn't even do a proper di le que no) and she was invited all night long.

Hi there !

Just to answer to squirrel …. I haven’t seen your post before. Sure if you are coming to Paris for the congress, we should try to meet, even though I think I might a bit busy during this period (the congress for myself first, and a few of friends from france and Europe coming for the event that I haven’t seen for a long time).

But anyway, email me at the following address, we should try to organise that :

I will be coming to Paris for New Year and was wondering if you know of any New Year events in good salsa clubs ....

It falls on Saturday, 31th of December 2005.

There were some announcements about salsa or latino parties (in clubs or restaurants or elsewhere) on the Salsa France web Forum (www.forumsalsa.net), and a thread to discuss about it (in french) "{broken link removed}" (salsa New Year) and you can have a look at these posts giving some sum up {broken links removed}.

Alas well known Sunday afternoon salsa parties (at the Barrio Latino or the Wagg) won't take place on Sunday, 1st of January 2006, the Sunday evening salsa party at the Sullivan will take place.

If further information is needed (kind of place, kind of music, kind of dance), I can answer here in english.

I was highly recommended this link: http://www.salsafrance.com/english and especially the party at "Les Etoiles" for fridays and "El Globo" (I asked for clubs with rather on2-dancers and appropriate music). I cannot tell anything about these clubs for I didn't see them, but they sound great!

Perhaps Alias can tell us more?

Perhaps Alias can tell us more?
Of course I recommend "SalsaFrance in English (http://www.salsafrance.com/rubrique.php3?id_rubrique=63)" (www.salsafrance.com/english/) (written by feliz) to all english readers.

I found it valuable enough to tell on its creation in this post (http://www.dance-forums.com/showthread.php?p=136411#post136411) on 2005-03-17 of the "Salsa clubs/instructors in Paris? (http://www.dance-forums.com/showthread.php?t=6716)" thread of the "Dance-Forums (http://www.dance-forums.com/)" web forum.

I like the description of the salsa places (Where to dance: Paris's can't-miss clubs (http://www.salsafrance.com/article.php3?id_article=278)) (How to get there: Addresses (http://www.salsafrance.com/article.php3?id_article=277)) and there are also articles and interviews.

Note that to get the latest up-to-date information on salsa parties and clubs in Paris (for instance does this party still happen, does it happen tonight, or for new parties) you have to look at the "Annonces (http://www.forumsalsa.net/yabbse2/index.php?board=2)" section (filter on Mon (http://www.forumsalsa.net/yabbse2/index.php?board=2;filter=lundi) - Tue (http://www.forumsalsa.net/yabbse2/index.php?board=2;filter=mardi) - Wed (http://www.forumsalsa.net/yabbse2/index.php?board=2;filter=mercredi) - Thu (http://www.forumsalsa.net/yabbse2/index.php?board=2;filter=jeudi) - Fri (http://www.forumsalsa.net/yabbse2/index.php?board=2;filter=vendredi) - Sat (http://www.forumsalsa.net/yabbse2/index.php?board=2;filter=samedi) - Sun (http://www.forumsalsa.net/yabbse2/index.php?board=2;filter=dimanche)) of the "SalsaFrance web forum (http://www.forumsalsa.net/yabbse2/)" where you have first hand information from the teachers and DJs themselves (it's in french but you should catch the places and dates).

Threads on SalsaFrance are in french but you can sort of translate the web page to english with automatic online tools such as (translate.google.com (http://translate.google.com/)) (buttons (http://translate.google.com/translate_buttons?hl=en) using JavaScript).

The (Where to learn salsa: Dance and drum like a Parisian latino (http://www.salsafrance.com/article.php3?id_article=231)) is not so good however, have a look at my own list of "Some Salsa Instructors in Paris (http://www.dance-forums.com/showthread.php?p=141211#post141211)" (2004-05) on Dance-Forums (http://www.dance-forums.com/).

Note that feliz announced right here in this thread (Dancing in Paris (http://www.salsaforums.com/viewtopic.php?t=243)) in this post (http://www.salsaforums.com/viewtopic.php?p=2557#2557) on 2005-03-20 (and also in this other thread):

I was highly recommended this link: http://www.salsafrance.com/english and especially the party at "Les Etoiles" for fridays and "El Globo" (I asked for clubs with rather on2-dancers and appropriate music).

"Les Etoiles" on Friday (DJ Willy) is in fact a place to find a group of "mambo" dancers and maybe (?) they dance mostly on2 (rather than on1).

"El Globo" on Saturday is advertised as a "Latino Party" (not as a "Salsa Party"), I can't tell more as I haven't gone there yet, but I notice that for the firsts saturdays of september 2006 "DJ Gabriel" (the DJ for dancing mambo) is not announced anymore but you may find instead some reggaeton ...

Where to dance mambo (LA1, P2, ET2) - Quick list:
"La Coupole" (Tue) (DJ Jack el Oso, DJ Pacho) (part of time for mambo).
"Le Balajo" (Thu) (DJ Willy) (since 2006-03).
"Les Etoiles" (Fri) (DJ Willy).
"Barrio Latino" (Sun) (15h-19h30) (DJ David Lartist, DJ Willy).
"O'Sullivans" (Sun) (22h-2h?) (DJs PapasDJs).

Address and metro station:
La Coupole (102 boulevard du Montparnasse 75014 Paris) (metro station "Vavin" or else "Montparnasse") (Tue).
Le Balajo (9 rue de Lappe 75011 Paris) (metro station "Bastille") (Thu).
Les Etoiles (61 rue du Chateau d'Eau 75010 Paris) (metro station "Chateau d'Eau") (Fri).
Le Barrio Latino (46 rue du Faubourg St Antoine 75012 Paris) (metro station "Bastille") (Sun).
O'Sullivans (92 boulevard de Clichy 75018 Paris) (metro station "Blanche") (Sun).

To locate a club you can go to the Paris Metro and Bus web site (www.ratp.fr) and its english section (www.ratp.info/informer/anglais/) and have a look at the interactive map (http://www.ratp.info/orienter/cv/cv_en/carteparis.php) (or go to a map web site).

There may be some other places (new or small or ...).
And of course you have clubs for Cuban style (Casino).

The last "Vendredi Salsa Gorda aux Etoiles" with DJ Willy was last week on 2006-11-03.
The new "Les Vendredi Latinos dans les Etoiles" with DJ El Cuco de la salsa (organized by Salsa Rumba Production) will take place from this friday on 2006-11-10.

With a shift of DJ and from a "salsa" party to a "latino" party, does it classify anymore as a place to dance Mambo?

Anyway, even if DJ Willy is one of my favorite DJs (if not my favorite DJ), I did find that the place is a bit too old for me (you breathe it) to go, note that frenchsalsera wrote earlier in this thread "the place is really not nice to stay (old place, kind of cold)".
The other places to dance Mambo are nicer.

Some upcoming (non-weekly) Salsa parties in Paris
This as an opportunity to mention some non-weekly parties:

2007-W12

• Barrio Latino (MON) (2007-03-19) (David Lartist (www.salsaparisstyle.com)) (F (http://www.forumsalsa.net/yabbse2/index.php?board=2;action=display;threadid=8244))
(46 rue du Faubourg St Antoine 75012 Paris) (01 55 78 84 75) (near "Bastille")
(7€) (party) + (2€) per item
(19h-2h) (DJ Willy, DJ Steeve)
You all know the weekly Sunday afternoon Salsa party at the Barrio Latino, from time to time (once a month or less) there is also a party on Monday evening, titled "Salsa in White" (dress in white).

• O'Sullivans By the Mill (http://www.osullivans-pubs.com/btm/default.php) (WED) (2007-03-21) (Dance Angels) (F (http://www.forumsalsa.net/yabbse2/index.php?board=2;action=display;threadid=11497))
(92 boulevard de Clichy 75018 Paris) (near "Blanche")
(10€) (party, one drink)
(21h) (DJs "Dance Angels" (Gabriel (http://www.gabrieldj.com/) and Willy))
(with a show from Felipe Polanco)
You all know the weekly Sunday evening Salsa party at O'Sullivans, well this Wednesday you get a party in the same place with two of the DJs, go across the bar to find the entrance.

• Club Med World (THU) (2007-03-22) (www.clubmedworld.com) (Marco (www.salsapassionparis.com)) (F (http://www.forumsalsa.net/yabbse2/index.php?board=2;action=display;threadid=11327))
(39 cour Saint Emilion 75012 Paris) (metro station "cour Saint Emilion")

(20h15 level 1 level 3, 21h level 2 level 4) (CBL class)
(22h-23h) (Club Med World show (nothing to do with salsa)) then some salsa shows
(23h-2h) (DJ Thomas, Ice-T, Marco)
From time to time (once a month or less) Marco organizes this party in the Club Med World room which has a stage, a dancefloor, and a bar.
PS: The party may start as late as 23h20 and the reggaeton or nightclub-like set as early as 1am leaving you with only one hour of salsa (and some zouk or bachata) until 1am, so it is not recommended to the hardcore salsero, the place is fine however.

2007-W13

From time to time (this year on 2006-09-30, 2006-12-02, 2007-02-03, 2007-03-31) this well-known salsa party takes place in a place in the Telecom Paris engineer school, you get like 7 DJs rotating in two rooms (an entrance room and the main room) playing music for Mambo dancers or Casino Dancers (this is a mixed party), and a lot of people (this is the place where you see salseros you haven't seen in a while) filling the place, nice atmosphere so you let go the hotness and non sliding floor.

• Acadanse d'Erlimont (SAT) (2007-03-31) (www.capdanse.fr) (F (http://www.forumsalsa.net/yabbse2/index.php?board=2;action=display;threadid=9907))

Hi everyone!

I'm new here though perhaps some of you might know me from the Dance Forums.

I'm going to be in Paris from near the end of June until early August and definitely want to dance salsa. There is a ton of information you have posted (thanks! it's very helpful) but I also have a few questions...

Are these "club nights" as opposed to socials? I noticed that entrance comes with drinks...in my experience serious dancers don't drink, but in "latin" clubs they do. Do people dress up a lot? (I guess I'll ditch the sweatpants and socks-with-high-heels look...jejeje)

Do people often show up alone to these nights? I definitely hit up salsa clubs by myself in Canada and in the US but maybe it is different in France? I know that etiquette is different in every country - is it ok for girls to ask guys to dance?

Anyway, I'm Jeni, I'm Canadian but I live in Boston and I dance On 2, but I also do On 1, Cuban, Power-2, whatever. Nice to meet you all!

-Jeni :)

Hi belle Jeni,
Welcome to SalsaForums, and welcome to Paris.

The term "socials" is not used in Paris, do you mean parties dedicated to salsa dancers and where only salsa dancers go, possibly taking place in a ballroom with parquet dancefloor, possibly organised by dance studios in their place, as opposed to clubs (bars or discotheques) where the average joe can go and have a drink (and smoke)?

I have described different types of salsa and of parties in Paris in this post (http://www.salsaforums.com/showpost.php?p=23862&postcount=11).

The parties I've mentionned in the "Where to dance Cuban Casino" and "Where to dance Mambo" are Salsa parties dedicated to "trained" salsa dancers (but there may be a lot of beginners on some nights of the week), however they often take place in clubs (restaurants, bars, discotheques) with the club's staff at entrance or cloakroom or bar and on the salsa side you find the salsa Instructor and the salsa DJ, so you mainly find salsa dancers but some random guy may also come in for a drink if the place is visible, and note that unfortunately the law about No Smoking in public places in France was not inforced in restaurants or bars or discotheques (should be in January 2008) then we have to suffer from this.

Le Privé (Tue): Discotheque with a bar, but only salsa dancers on Tuesday.
Le Balajo (Thu): Dance hall with a bar when you enter, as it is located in an animated walking quarter at Bastille, people walk by the street and may come in (and smoke).
Le Barrio Latino (Sun): Restaurant in the upper floor and bar at the ground level, on sunday afternoon you don't find a lot of non dancers (and they stick to the bar), on night parties there is the restaurant and you find more non dancers and smokers.
Le Sullivan (Sun): The non dancers usually stay in the bar with bar's music, as there is an entrance fee for the separate room where the salsa party takes place, but they may come in out of curiosity.

La Pachanga (Mon-Sun): Restaurant (I haven't seen a lot of diners on monday, but there may be more on weekends as well as more non dancers) and bar, not so visible from the outside with the entrance in a side street, it is located in the animated Montparnasse quarter with its movie theaters and restaurants ("crêperies" …).
El Diab'Litho Latino (Tue-Sat): Restaurant and bar.
Viaduc Café (Fri): The main room at ground level is freed for the salsa party, there is a bar in the first room and maybe a restaurant upstairs.
Moving de Thiais (Sat): Gym club during the day, big ballrooms for the dancing parties on friday and saturday night, unlimited soft drink and no alcohol, you only find dancers, and there is a room for smokers.
Wagg (Sun): Discotheque with a bar (under ground level), near "St Germain des Près" and "St Michel" which are also animated quarters with walking streets.

As I am a serious dancer ;) , I don't drink alcohol and I don't smoke, and when I mention that a drink is included in the entrance fee this can fortunately be a soft drink (as soda or fruit juice) and that helps (dance parties should follow the unlimited soft drink system, but taking place in a restaurant, bar or discotheque, this can't be).

I haven't yet listed small bars where you can dance salsa, places where you can dance Colombian salsa, Latino parties, and I don't know much about.

Do people dress up a lot?
Have a look at the salsa parties' photos on some web sites (Salsa Furiosa (http://www.salsafuriosa.com/), Xandrex's gallery (http://xandrex.free.fr/gallery/salsa/), Salsaliente (http://www.salsaliente.com/) …).

Do people often show up alone to these nights? I definitely hit up salsa clubs by myself in Canada and in the US but maybe it is different in France? I know that etiquette is different in every country - is it ok for girls to ask guys to dance?

I believe that yes, you can go there alone as you will meet the dancers there, and you should generally find dancers to dance with, the lists above are a selection of parties that last and bring together enough salseros (there may be exceptions).

And yes, it is ok for girls to ask guys to dance (the guys like it and should not say no usually as it is unusual), and that's a good idea if you're not invited for a while (unknown face) as the other guys will see you dance and know you're a dancer (and even a good one).

Oh, thank you so much for your response!! It makes me feel much less anxious about my time in Paris...sounds like I can dance pretty much every night if I want. What more could a salsera want?

The term "socials" is not used in Paris, do you mean parties dedicated to salsa dancers and where only salsa dancers go, possibly taking place in a ballroom with parquet dancefloor, possibly organised by dance studios in their place, as opposed to clubs (bars or discotheques) where the average joe can go and have a drink (and smoke)?

You are pretty much spot on with that definition :) I had something like Jimmy Anton's in New York in mind when I mentioned the word 'social.' I guess it's because I'd be a bit more shy or a bit more wary going to a club by myself than to a social. But from what you say, it sounds like it's totally fine for me to show up and ask a couple of guys to dance and then people should [hopefully] start asking me.

note that unfortunately the law about No Smoking in public places in France was not inforced in restaurants or bars or discotheques (should be in January 2008) then we have to suffer from this.

Too bad...I guess I'll be washing my hair a LOT!

As I am a serious dancer ;) , I don't drink alcohol and I don't smoke

Save me a dance?!

*Bump*

Wowwwwwww I'm going to be in Paris in just a couple of days and the first things that went into my suitcase were my dancing shoes (although this may be a problem because that means they will be the last things to come out of my suitcase...hmm...) Anyway, I'm armed with the list of clubs Alias gave me and am just wondering if there are any SFers out there in the area going to be around Paris for the next 5 weeks. Would love to meet/dance with a SFer!

What's the meaning of the expression "being off the hook"?
Anyway on the SalsaFrance forum there is no mention of a current salsa party at "Les Etoiles" (and I don't even know if this place is open again).

Les Etoiles are closed. The'll open again around September not as a salsa dancing but as a small concert hall (including salsa ?)

Some clubs may close and some salsa parties not take place during summer (July August) or part of summer, so check before going.

Here's a quick list of some salsa parties:

Where to dance Mambo in Paris (http://www.salsaforums.com/showpost.php?p=32116&postcount=34):
(Tue) Le Privé (Instr Seve, DJ Jano) for now at another place "Le Prestige".
(Thu) Balajo (Instr David Lartist or Mike, DJ Willy).
((Fri) Moving de Thiais (Instrs, DJ Olivier Rio or Gregory) (outside Paris)).
(Sun) Barrio Latino (Instr David Lartist and Mab, DJ David Lartist, DJ Willy).
(Sun) O'Sullivans (Instr Seve, DJs Dance Angels (Gabriel, Willy)).
All open all summer.

Where to dance Cuban Casino in Paris (http://www.salsaforums.com/showpost.php?p=32076&postcount=33):
(Mon→Sun) La Pachanga, closed from August 12 (Sun) to 22 (Wed).
(Tue→Sat) El Diab'Litho Latino, open all summer?
(Fri) Viaduc Café (Instr Alex "Salserito", DJ Alex "Salserito") closed during July August.
(Sat) Retro Republique Dancing (Instr guest, DJ Didi) open all summer.
(Sat) Moving de Thiais (Instrs, DJ Sergio) (outside Paris) open all summer.
(Sun) Wagg (Instr Roberto el Cubano, DJ Jack el Calvo) closed August 5, 12, 19.

In summer time you can sometimes dance salsa outside on the banks of the Seine river at "Quais de Seine" (Quai St Bernard Jardin Tino Rossi), it depends on the weather (http://www.meteofrance.com/FR/mameteo/prevVille.jsp?LIEUID=FR75056), a schedule and those who put on and DJ, so you've got to check (F (http://www.forumsalsa.net/yabbse2/index.php?board=2;action=display;threadid=12651)) (F (http://www.forumsalsa.net/yabbse2/index.php?board=2;action=display;threadid=12231)).

There are 3 levels in this discotheque and there are stairs to go up or down near the entrance or on the other side, the main dance floor is downstairs (with an unusual silvery dancefloor looking like some aluminium or something) and this is where you find the party for Mambo dancers, and upstairs you will find two rooms with a bar and a dance floor and this is where you will find the party for Casino dancers, so you can shift from one to the other at any time just by climbing up or going down the stairs.

There's a place very important if you want dance salsa in Paris :

LA JAVA : 105, Rue du Faubourg-du-Temple. , 75010 Paris

La Java is the most older "NightClub" in Paris (1920 !!!)...And Edith Piaf (the french lady-singer who sing "La Vie En Rose" made her beginning here !!!).In the years 80 it was a place very important for the salsa music in Paris...A lot of international bands played in La Java...
La Java is about 450 people...and it's only 10 euros !!

Each month, there's the "Movida Latina"...10H30 am => 5H00 pm !!! Band in live, 2 djs (the last month Dj El Chino From Colombia) etc...

If U are in Paris......the next Movida Latina is the 17 of november....with my band in live !!! Salsa Romántica but DURA !!!!!!! :D

I live in Lisbon but I'm coming over to Paris for the weekend.
I'd like to go dancing Salsa on Friday (30th Nov). I only dance Salsa on 1.
This is tonight, so first let us give a quick and short answer.
I have to guess that you mean CBL slotted salsa "on 1" (On1), so I will mention the "salsa portoricaine" party (ie for CBL slotted salsa dancers) (there is only one "salsa portoricaine" party inside Paris tonight so let's not go into "On1 or On2"):

Philippe and Madjid were DJs at "Les Etoiles" friday salsa party for Mambo dancers (from 2006-12-29 to 2007-02-23), but then the place closed (and on reopening this salsa party is not planned), so they found a new place (which is old as well) and gave there a one shot party on 2007-05-18, and now they will put on a party every two weeks on friday with the first one on 28 Sep 2007 (with a Big Spenders' show):

• Felix Faure (FRI) (w04) (2007-09-28) (www.philmadj.com) (F (http://www.forumsalsa.net/yabbse2/index.php?board=2;action=display;threadid=13084))
(72 avenue Felix Faure 75015 Paris) (metro "Boucicaut") (bus 62 "Felix Faure")
(10€) (class, party, one drink) + (1€) per item
(20h30-22h) (class with Mouaze (www.mouaze.com))
(22h-2h) (DJs Phil and Madj)Felix Faure Fri 20h30, 22h-2h
(w04) Fri 28 Sep, (w06) Fri 12 Oct, (w08) Fri 26 Oct, (w10) Fri 9 Nov, (w13) Fri 30 Nov.

NB. The Moving de Thiais (on Friday) may be more suitable for a beginner On1 dancer, but it is outside of Paris (and you may be an advanced On1 dancer).

Hi, Alias.

Thank you for the information you posted.
I've been dancing salsa for a few years, and it is still an addiction, eventough not as strong as it used to be.

Unfortunately I wasn't able to read your reply before boarding the plane, so when I got to Paris I decided to go to Barrio Latino.
Big mistake... 20€ to get in with right to one drink, and not a single salsa. Regaeton and samba all night.

I had taken the address of Felix Faure with me, but it was already 2AM when I got out of Barrio Latino, and it was raining (almost impossible to get a taxi) so I decided to go back to the Hotel.

The next day, I heard some good salsa at a very small bar in Quartier Latin, and the bartender gave me the address of a Club called "La Peña", near Boulevard Saint-Germain 168.
Unfortunately when I got there (about 10pm) it was closed.

So not a single salsa for me during the weekend in Paris...

It seems that clubs avoid salsa nights on Friday and Saturday.
I find it strange that there is no club fully dedicated to salsa.
It seems there are only scatered salsa parties, and no regular place where you know you can dance.

If you ever get to Lisbon, there is one place were you can always find salsa dancers to dance with: Barrio Latino in Lisboa is open on Wednesdays, Fridays and Saturdays. Thurdays nights are not very popular, so I don't know if they are going to conitnue to open on Thursdays.

Thanks again for the info.
I hope I have better luck next time.
If I go back to Paris, I'll look up this thread again.

All the best.
Rui.

Hi, Rui.

Thanks for the feedback (it may help others) (and I appreciate that you took the time to tell about your salsa experience in Paris contributing back to this thread).
Sorry for your salsa misfortune in Paris.

Your first post was a kind of last minute one, so maybe you just discovered this thread before leaving and then didn't have the time to read it (or through it) entirely, then missing this post (http://www.salsaforums.com/showthread.php?p=23857#post23857) linking to the Paris weekender (http://www.salsaforums.com/showthread.php?t=2331) thread where the Barrio Latino question was raised and where this post (http://www.salsaforums.com/showpost.php?p=23862&postcount=11) explains the Salsa dances and parties in Paris (already hinted in this post (http://www.dance-forums.com/showthread.php?p=122015#post122015) of the Salsa clubs/instructors in Paris? (http://www.dance-forums.com/showthread.php?t=6716) thread on DF).

To answer some of your questions or concerns:

There are at least two places dedicated to Salsa with Salsa dance parties almost every night (see Where to dance Casino in Paris (http://www.salsaforums.com/showpost.php?p=32076&postcount=33)), but else you often have a Salsa Instructor or DJ who organises a Salsa dance party on a given day of the week in some place (which is often a restaurant or bar or old "salle de bal" or discotheque) (as already suggested in this post (http://www.salsaforums.com/showpost.php?p=38991&postcount=40) earlier in this thread), of course some of these places may already have an interest to salsa or to partner dances.

So for any party you have to remember the place (where) and the day (when), and also check if it is a "salsa cubaine" party (for Casino dancers) or "salsa portoricaine" party (for CBL slotted salsa dancers) or mixed (or else more of a "Colombian" party, or "Latino" party, as salsa is divers in Paris), and of course take notice of who is the DJ as the music is a key element for dancers (that's why I mention them, dedicated dancers will know the DJs and some DJs have fans who will follow them where they play).

About Friday and Saturday nights (also see this post (http://www.salsaforums.com/showthread.php?p=25981#post25981) in the Where to stay in Paris? (close to clubs) (http://www.salsaforums.com/showthread.php?t=1786) thread), as already mentionned before there are weekly "salsa cubaine" parties (Viaduc, Retro, Diablitho, Pachanga) (I haven't tested them recently) and a mixed (cubaine/porto) party (Moving de Thiais on Sat) (on Friday see …), and some non weekly parties (see Non weekly Salsa dance parties (dates) (http://www.salsaforums.com/showpost.php?p=64510&postcount=67)).

Note that there are places in Paris (sometimes called "cyber café") where you can connect to the Internet (and then check this thread), maybe it's a good idea to locate some of them when you still have an Internet connection (and also locate the Salsa clubs on a map of course as I give the full address in standard format), you could have asked about Saturday and …

This year the 31th of December falls on Monday.

On Sunday 30 Dec 2007 we still have the Barrio Latino and the Sullivan but not the Wagg, on Tuesday 1st Jan 2008 some parties may not take place (e.g. Balajo, Diablitho), and on Monday 31 Dec 2007 we get some "special" parties (higher entrance fee) (with dinner/buffet or without/after) (you often have to book).

Some parties are advertised on the SalsaFrance forum, and "Les soirées « Réveillon du Jour de l'An » (http://www.forumsalsa.net/yabbse2/index.php?board=2;action=display;threadid=14090)" helps you to find the corresponding threads.

For instance:

Chalet du Lac des Buttes Chaumont (Paris 19e) (DJ Thomas, DJ Manu) (60€ - 35€) (F (http://www.forumsalsa.net/yabbse2/index.php?board=2;action=display;threadid=13941))
Studio à La Bellevilloise (Paris 20e) (DJ Didi) ( - 25€) (F (http://www.forumsalsa.net/yabbse2/index.php?board=2;action=display;threadid=14001))
El Diab'Litho Latino (Paris 11e) (DJ Jack el Calvo, DJ Ahinama) (25€ - 20€) (C (http://www.fiestacubana.net/ftopict-1447.html))
La Pachanga (Paris 14e) (DJ Alex "salserito"?) (65€ - 15€)
La Java (Paris 10e) (DJ Natalia la Tropikal, DJ Mario, live music) ( - 25€) (F (http://www.forumsalsa.net/yabbse2/index.php?board=2;action=display;threadid=14035))
Moving de Thiais (Thiais 94) (DJ Sergio?, live music) ( - 25€) (F (http://www.forumsalsa.net/yabbse2/index.php?board=2;action=display;threadid=14072))
Salons Leda (Ennery 95) (DJ Jano, DJs Phil and Madj) (75€ - 60€ - 35€) (F (http://www.forumsalsa.net/yabbse2/index.php?board=2;action=display;threadid=13711))

Does this apply to salsa clubs too? And will it be enforced?

Hi people :)

My partner and me will be on a weekend break in Paris on Thurs 28th Feb, returning home late on Sun 2nd March.

I've trawled through lots of posts trying to look for places to go dance mambo. We'll go for Le Balajo Thursday, but we're at a loss for Friday and Saturday :? Seems to be all Cuban Fri/Sat and we would really like to stick with mambo on1/on2 style of music, but will be willing to give the Cuban style venues a go if nothing comes up. Does anyone have recommendations for a good nights dancing for Fri/Sat.

We've yet to book a hotel and from what I can work out it looks like the 11th district is most central to the venues - am I correct in that assumption?

Any replies would be much appreciated

Thank you in advance

Felix

I just returned from another fabulous weekend of dancing in Paris! I have gone a number of times in the past year as it is where I get the biggest salsa fix (besides NYC). In terms of where to go on Fri/Sat nights, check out salsafrance.com for postings on special parties. I also hadn't found any regular weekend places for on1/on2, but there always seems to be a special soiree on any given weekend night. Last Sat there was a mambo party outside of Paris. Otherwise, I've heard Moving au Thais on Sat night is good for mambo, but it is also outside of Paris. I went to Pachanga on a Sat night once and the salsa was OK. Lots of Cuban and reggaetton and much more of a nightclub/meat-market. Luckily I went with a group of friends as I don't think it would have been very fun on my own.

Shame that you are leaving on Sunday night because for me, Barrio Latino and O'Sullivans are the best places for mambo. Non-stop dancing, a high-level of dancers and awesome music. Both DJ David Lartist and DJs Willy and Gaby play great music and organize an awesome party. If you are leaving late on Sunday, you are probably already planning to go to Barrio, but get there early so you don't miss a minute!

Thank you Alias for posting the change of date for O'Sullivans last weekend. I went on Monday and it was really good!

I always stay in the Bastille area because it is within walking distance to Barrio Latino and Le Balajo and also a quick cab ride away from Gare du Nord. If you want specific recommendations, send me a PM.

Have fun!

p.s. Jenibelle, it is heavenly at the clubs now that smoking isn't allowed.

Hey Bailando - Thank you for the reply

I'll do as you say and check salsafrance.com for any "specials" before we leave the UK. I'm hoping that we'll get some "on the night" advice about where to go Fri/Sat when we go to Le Balajo on the Thursday night.

Unfortunately, I kind of messed up the Sunday night - we fly out early evening (my late Sunday was infact late afternoon). Will have to be for the Next time at Barrio!

Cheers my friend

There is a party for Mambo dancers on Saturday 23 Feb 2008, as you already know if you checked "Non weekly Salsa dance parties (dates) (http://www.salsaforums.com/showpost.php?p=64510&postcount=67)", see MaJuSee.

The O'Sullivans Sunday salsa party will take place on Sunday 24 Feb 2008 (and not on Monday 25) as already stated by the updated post (http://www.salsaforums.com/showthread.php?p=70177#post70177) above.

On Monday there is La Pachanga where you can dance Casino (which by the way breaks on 1 (and has counts 123 567 ) when you learn it) and it may be the Pach' best night of the week for intermediate or advanced dancers (with Int and Adv (Rueda de) Casino classes and corresponding dance level at the party, unless it is easier these days with Alex instead of David).

On Monday there is also a small salsa party at Le Bizen (111 rue Réaumur 75002 Paris) (bizen.fr) (01 40 13 81 81) organised by Charly (since 2006-11-20) (22h-1h?) (10€) (F (http://www.forumsalsa.net/yabbse2/index.php?board=2;action=display;threadid=10536)), which is announced as mixed (Cubano/Porto).

It shows up in the Monday filter (may miss some) I gave in 2006:
