I have the Mike Bello Timing CD. How good is it...? That can kinda of depend.
When I first started dancing I would get on beat through trial and error. I had no idea how to find the 1. Personally I think the timing CD is good for someone who already has an understanding on how the count works and is looking to improve their musicality.
One of the CDs contains tracks that isolates different instruments/rythms. Each track is about a minute long and the count is only given the first couple of measures. The beat is pretty fast, and I would have to start the track over again several times to try and catch the count. The second CD contains songs that had the count over them. Which actually was pretty helpful.
What really helped me most was SalsaRhythms (they have a website).
It is essentially an e-book. You read a tutorial then listen to the audio example. They only cover the most basic rhythms (ie clave, tumboa, montuno, cowbells), but it was easy to follow and made a lot of sense.
Looking back now I should have done some more research on the internet. There is a great site called http://www.salsa-merengue.co.uk/ that has some good information, and its free...
