Has anyone changed up their style of salsa a bit. Ever get bored with the style you do? How did you recover? Instead of continuing with On1, did you learn On2? Did you take a break? Or do something altogether different like Tango? and...How did you (or what made you) come back to it newly refreshed?

:P Ahhhh......we are talking 'salsa refreshment' !
For me, personally, the best policy is to visit a different city (if possible). By removing yourself physically of your hometown, you have no choice but to think/operate on a different mode ('survival out of comfort zone').
This frame of mind allows for new possibilities (in this case, a refreshed look at salsa :P ) !
Not to mention all the new faces we are going to meet & dance with 8) ! Everybody has something different to offer on the dancefloor, and what a perfect opportunity to snap 'em up...!
Same can be said about salsa visitors to your city. They will bring with them their own local knowledge that is priceless....... :D !

When I first started I was being taught a hustle-like style of salsa, however, it created great amounts of friction with my philosophy, so I had to leave that style behind as soon as it was being taught to me. Hence, I am where I have been at for the past 4 years.
I have not gotten tired of the style for it is very well what to me the music calls for. Flava, passion and love. It pretty much is like finding your soul mate, you can never get tired nor fall out of love with that person, for the are even those things you can’t imagine you ever wanted.
I seem not to get tired because I look at salsa not as bodies in motion, but soul in motion and as long as my friend of mind stays feeling what the music brings out in me, it doesn’t get old, nor tiring. For, my salsa world is consumed by the same passionate feeling, night in night out, dance in dance out. Even the same song heard a 1000 times still feels like the first time I heard it, for I am not using my mind to judge it just my heart to feel it.
However, when I’ve gotten tired of salsa, is because the DJ is stinking up the joint with songs that stink, and thinks because they were made during the classic period of salsa they are good , at which time I take my shoes off, go to my car and blast some Salsa followed by some way hot son montunos.
In all, I search not from without for an internal salsa satisfaction with the music, but from within, neither the setting, the style, or lack off, nor a break, can take away that feeling. The only thing that can is when my soul is aching to journey into the physical world, and the DJ happens to stink!

I'm having the roughest time and the worst two years in my salsa progression. :( Salsa in my area for me in my area has been awful. It started off great but I have gotten so frustrated that I've just given up for a while. I never thought salsa would be about cliques, egos, tricks, pecking order and some times all out war. I never had that perception at all until now. So, in my hiatus, I have decided to just concentrate on the music and come back to my love of dancing later in the summer.

People can really bring us down peach, perhaps it is best you take a much needed break where you can come back to deal with same bull all over again. The music alone should keep you entertained for days on end. =)

Thanks Boriken. :) You're right. Renewed strength is definitely needed. Thank goodness for the music.

peach... I am in the middle of such a war... and I hate every minute of it... it just ruins my Salsa nights out... to see all those hateful looks, to feel the pressure surrounding me...
and all I ever wanted was to dance...!!!!
still, I go on, as I cannot survive without Salsa!
Ah, I see this is where the conversation that spilled over into another forum originated.
Sorry to hear about the issues. It happens, unfortunately. And I feel your pain. Been thru issues myself over the years.
But I still like it too much to give it up.

Hi TJ! Welcome to the other side. :D

Ditto that! Welcome to the SF! :D
Hey thanks.
One difference I've already noticed, is that DF seems to have more of a "Ballroom salsa" feel to it. This forum seems to not.
Not that there's anything wrong with either. Just an observation.

Hmm, any chance you can articulate this difference a bit more? I'm curious now...

TJ, it wouldn't have anything to do with the members, would it  ?

Lol - well certainly the more hardcore salser@s are here.
Honestly, I don't want to get into an argument about the differences between club salsa goers and the ballroom salsa dancers. Just look at that DF thread about the differences between the two and how the majority was totally in denial that there is a difference. Lol!
It really doesn't matter, but it does make a difference between when I really get to have my salsa fix and when I only have an "ok" time.

Yes, I can see that happening. People take your progression, style and teaching as direct insult against them. For the life of me I can't understand that. From a typical human standpoint, our dancing has nothing to do with them. People spend way too much time and energy on jealousy, competition (outside the competitive arena) and hate for no apparent reason other than them wanting to be where you are or not wanting you to be where they are in their perceived pecking order of the Salsa world. :?

TJ, were you speaking of this one at DF: Salsa-Club vs. Salsa-Ballroom (http://www.dance-forums.com/viewtopic.php?t=2291&postdays=0&postorder=asc&start=0) or another thread?

Fair enough tj... but I wasn't so much even asking about club and ballroom salsa (although you know where I come down on that issue). I was just curious what (aside from a lack of recognitoon between the two) gave the salsa forum over at DF a more "ballroom salsa" feel to you... especially given that many of our current members here are crossovers from there as well. Call it moderating/administrative curiosity on my part, not instigation.

I feel you on that one :!:
To PeachE: Yes. That thread.

Lol! It was mostly how the majority denied the differences like you said. But I’ll also add that some of our more recent threads such as the one by dancing_feet along with etchuck’s congress experience.
It’s not a big deal, but I will say that salser@s who dance a lot of ballroom have a much different experience than those of us who are mostly club-goers. Did you notice how there seems to be an antipathy against guys hitting on women? I find the idea of telling the teacher on a (admittedly weird and socially inept) guy who is trying to hit on a gal to be humorous. Especially compared to how aggressive guys get in the salsa club scene. Hey, dancing is a contact sport – the flirting is going to happen, because, individual cases aside, the majority of the ladies enjoy the “right guy” flirting with her. It’s the stupid/stubborn guys who muck it up.

Yes, of course, I enjoy it when a guy I like flirts with me... but the stubborn ones get on my nerves!
