Been learning salsa for about a month now...and still don't know very much but I'm taking several classes each week and am getting better.

My classes seem to focus mostly on steps, patterns, combinations, etc...all the stuff that's needed to get people dancing out the door. I've read all over this forum and dance-forums that the basic steps are absolutely critical to everything, and often seperate the best from the merely competent. I'd like to learn things right the first time and have a solid foundation that becomes so second-nature I can make a brand new combination look "authentic" immediately (not to mention make my partner look better).

I'd also like to learn the basic shines - mostly because I think they'd make ideal solo (read: at home with a mirror) practice improving my footwork, coordination, and "dance-sense".

I've had a hard time finding good resources on these things. My goal is to get 2-3 DVDs, learn and practice for another month or so, and then take some private lessons to help correct the things I'll inevitably do wrong. Hopefully the private lessons will also serve as a springboard to a solid home practice regimen that will last me for a while. I'm trying to get the best bang-for-buck that I can as I'm too poor to be spending $50/week on privates for a long time period, but can afford to spend a few bucks initially to help me get through 'salsa hell' faster.

So...what's best out there for on-1 NY/LA styles, for a very tall, very white guy? I've looked at:
* Al Espinoza's "Men's Styling" DVDs but didn't find much information.
* Al's "Hip Hop Shines" DVD didn't seem to inspire the reviewer from this site.
* Mike Bello has a shines DVD but it's on-2 (I guess "on-clave" is what he would prefer it described as)...pardon my ignorance, but would this work for on-1 styles
* Shaka Brown has a shines DVD that's also on-2.
* Ron Rosario & wife "Red Hot Salsa: Mambo Shines" that is again on-2
* Frankie Martinez' DVD on body isolations wowed people but was criticized as not instructional, just demonstrative
* Alex De Silva was mentioned on one of these forums, but the titles/descriptions on his site didn't give away which DVDs would be applicable.
* Others I've missed?

Help a newbie!

P.S. I realize that leading is one element I didn't mention, and that's because I already have enough "combination"-oriented stuff online I can reference for practice with the invisible partner...that and it's what I focus on the most at my group lessons, where 5min of tangible leading is worth more than an hour with an invisible partner. If I can get the stylings and cuban motion and stuff down pat, it would allow me to focus even more on being a good leader. At least that's my thinking.

Well the only thing I would suggest is that the video you purchase is from someone whose style you like and can see yourself doing.

I enjoy watching the flashy LA style salsa (Al Espinoza, Vazquez Brother, etc), but I couldn't see myself moving the same way they do.

For example I have a few NY shine DVDs that are pretty good because that's what Im looking for.

I'd say buy a basic shine video (I think Salsaventura has a good one) and go from there. You'll add certain elements of yourself once more time passess and you become familiar with them.

For video reviews you can check out www.salsaisgood.com or the member reviews section. To get an idea of what it would look lie before you purchase it try and do a search for the instructor online

P.S. Yes you can convert on2 shines to on1...I usually turn the volume off to help me.

Hmmm...

If I'm going for an all-around smooth, Eddie Torres NY-style, but on-1 rhythm, what would you recommend for style & shines? Would Al's Men's Styling DVD (about the only men's styling I can find) be a bad choice?

And does anyone have a good place to find examples from these teachers...video clips and all? I searche Youtube but didn't find all that much.

It also seems to be the most expensive collection of salsa dvd's, but it does have excellent variety.

Ummm for styling if you're looking for On2 flavor I'd say Al's stuff is not what you're looking for. But I don't own any of his DVDs so I can't say for certain. Go to www.dance-clips.com and it has some previews. His combination DVDs dont look bad at all though. Especially for intermediate dancers. Remember though...he used to be a pop-locker/ hip hop dancer before he started salsa so that is definately part of his style

Check out imambo.tv and see if you can findclips of Andres from Salsa Y Control. He dances On1, but it's definatelymore NY than LA.

If you have Itunes, there is a podcast by Salsafrenzy with some short instructional clips. It's all random instructors and shines and turns but there are some good clips in there. There are a few by Andreas as well. It's free as well but I think they aren't doing it anymore cos I don't think it's been updated since June.

Just do a search for salsafrenzy in the iTunes store.

OK so I've made the decision to buy a styling/body movement/shine DVD.
And I have it narrowed down to a few choices. I'll list thembelow and provide the link where I found them.

1.) SalsAventura's Shines

2.) Stephanie Gurnon: Feel the Groove OR Stephanie Gurnon: Get Down and Funky

3.) Shaka Brown's body isolation/shines

4.) Sekou's isloation/body movement DVD

Does anyone have any info on these DVDs? I've read a lot about Shaka Brown's, but I have no idea how it compares to the rest of the ones I listed.

I was deciding between Shaka Brown's and Sekou's for body movement and isolation..and I went with Sekou's first...

Sekou McMiller's Body Movement & Isloations for Salsa/Mambo Dancing

The chapters are broken down by feet, hips, shoulders, arms, body roll and all together. Sekou demonstrates at multiple angles so it's easy to imitate. He gives clear descriptions of the movement. As far as production values go, it's not a dancevision.com video, but there were smooth transitions between his solo instruction to the class instruction. It's like youre in the front row of a workshop. It looks great when he finally puts it all together. He throws in some variations at the end so you can review them and imitate once you understand the movement.

But overall, I learned something of value and incorporated them into my routines the same night I watched it. I used this during during a breakway/shines and the ladies responded positively, which is exactly the reaction that I'm looking for. ;)
