......I'm talking about social dancing mainly. I mean, if you are competing/doing shows then of course you need a partner.
As a social/club dancer, do you think there's a need to have an official dance partner....? What are the advantages and disadvantages?
I will share mine soon........

I have a partner... the disadvantages are I am very used to dancing with him and I know what he wants to do next (in the sense that I know if it's going to be a CBL or a turn etc.)
The advantages are I have someone to practice with, someone I enjoy dancing with and someone to take me home after! :)

I would say also that it would depend on your social scene. If everyone is friendly in your scene, it would be quite possible to get along without a main partner and have the freedom to be able to dance with a variety of dancers however, if the scene is the opposite, having your own partner is essential at least until the barriers are broken down. :)

So far I haven't had a regular dance partner, and I'm quite happy to keep it that way. To me a night of social dancing in my local scene tends to be about dancing with as many guys as possible (described by my friends as "ticking off the list") -- all of them if I can! I'm so used to dancing with lots of different leaders, whenever I dance with the same guy again and again on the same night, I start craving for a change!
