Honestly in today's age anyone can become a DJ with lots of downloaded music and a DIY DJ system. No more are those days where you have to collect and invest in music by going to your local record stores and waiting in line to pay for your vinyls. No more asking your parents for over thousands of dollars to buy top line equipment. Many of them ask their friends for music or download them illegally. They go to the music store to buy a cheap DJ system along with two powered speaker's and they think they are ready to rock the world.
They soon find out how much you really have to know about the business and it is not only spinning music. It all starts when you first receive that phone call, How do you answer the phone? You will be surprised how many DJs I call and I hear a "Yeah", "hello", or even a "Yo".
Next they find out how is your Customer Service skills cause many of them don't have any. How do you treat the client's or your dancer's, do you show them respect or do you think you are the law? Next they soon find out they needed to be a sound engineer one day when their equipment takes a tumble and they supplied no backup.
I could go on and on about this. The truth is that DJing has gotten a lot easier and as in all profession that this happens to, you see a lot more people getting into it. Only the strong will survive which usually are the people that take the time to improve their skills, learn the music, read a crowd, invest in new equipment, learn the business side of the profession in order to get paid more, go to workshops, read a lot and watch many DVD's.
Those that are constantly trying to better their service, their knowledge or skills are usually the ones that are in it for the long run, those who are in it for a quick buck usually don't last very long in the business.
But anyways I know I am late and don't want to be Mr. Negative. Happy DJ day! ;-)
