How musical are you?

I've been focusing more on musicality in my dancing lately and found this interesting article with a link to an online test from BBC labs. The test is more music related than dance but in 20 minutes you can take the test and get rated on perception, enthusiasm and emotional connection to music.

You need to register your email with BBC to take the test but it's quick and you can take the test right away.

I thought it was pretty cool, like the graphical display of how you rate (hence my avatar)

Thanks for the link! Very interesting.

I was especially interested in the musical perception tests, less so in the "questions about you" sections (though I can see why they need them for the study).

I scored 98% in the Musical Perception category :D

Nice! I didn't agree with my low score on the emotional connection portion. Glad you liked it too.

Test taken at 2AM after several drinks. Have significant formal musical education.

My Scores:
Enthusiasm For Music 80%
Musical Perception 100%
Emotional Connection 100%
Social Creativity 98%
Musical Curiosity 90%

II got 3/4 right for each genre in the "group the genres"
15/18 on the "on/off beat" test
High Accuracy on 6/9 tests (med on the others)
10/12 on melody memory

I got 99% on "Musical Perception" :-)

In the results for "Matching the Beat" I got 3 out of 18 incorrect, for "Tap to the beat" I got 5 Highs and 4 Mediums, and for "Melody memory" I got 2 out of 12 incorrect - I'm pretty happy with these results :)

Chris F that's an awesome result!

I have not formal musical education though... to be honest I think that musical perception is mostly what your born with, so you probably would've scored similar without it, then again maybe not, I can't claim to be an expert there!

I didn't think the self-answer questions were very illuminating, but the tests were interesting

Did really badly at grouping the genres - except for jazz and rock
16/18 for match the beat
Tap the beat - high in all except the the "trip-hoppy?" ones which totally threw me
12/12 for melody memory which really surprised me as I can't sing much tune at all, I expected to get about 3/12

Great test - very much fun and quite interesting for someone like me, who has no formal musical education \ training whatsoever, doesn't play any instruments professionally, can't read notes, etc...

The parts with the questions are much less interesting, as they rely on what you think you know, do, how you you think you perceive music etc. (I think that what it says in the introduction is correct - some of us might have the misconceptions of being more or less musical of what we, or our surroundings, think we are, although we might easily be overrating ourselves, or not knowing we have some hidden talent...) .

The tests do show much more accurately what you know \ how you perceive music (well, accept the one where you have to "tap" with the space bar, as this one is prone to error if your connection is not fast enough, you have a lot of traffic going at the time of the test, etc. ) .

Well, enough said, now for my score:

Musical Perception 96% yay! :)

Genre matching - got all jazz and rock good, and 3/4 in pop and hip hop.

Matching beats - got 15/18 correct

Tapping the beat - got 6 medium and 3 high
(but I did experience some delay between me pressing the key and the blue circle appearing, so it might have effected it...)

Melody memory - 12/12

Nice!

I definitely think the tapping to the beat isn't overly accurate as there is a slight delay and I find it really hard to account for it. I think the delay would probably vary very slightly and that would also throw the result off.

We have a winner:

The questions are kinda of stupid - answering "yes I can completely imagine life without music" doesn't tell one anything about how important music is to you, it just measures how good you think your imagination is! Etc.

I agree -- several of the questions were phrased oddly. For example, I gave neutral answers on the questions about "shivers down my spine" -- which may account for my mediocre score on "Emotional Connection" even though I think music affects me at a deep level.

My numbers were:
Enthusiasm for Music -- 96%
Musical Perception -- 99%
Emotional Connection -- 57%
Social Creativity -- 40%
Musical Curiosity -- 98%

It doesn't really make sense for my scores to have such high "enthusiasm" paired with such mediocre "emotional connection." I was proudest of my score for "matching the beat" with my ear, which was 17/18 -- but then only 3 highs and 6 mediums for "tapping to the beat" (which may be an issue of computer/internet speed). I pleasantly surprised myself by getting 9/12 on melody memory.
