Is Timba Old Enough to Have a Classic Period?

22 years of timba. That's quite awhile. I certainly feel that 20th century timba was the classic period and 21st century timba is just derivative. Comments?

That's a tough one...
But, I think that you can say that maybe 88'-96' would be a "classic" period, with some of the "early" Timba (NG La Banda, Dan Den, Irakere, new Los Van Van, Azucar Negra etc) .
In the years after that Timba became a bit more... noisy :)
Also in the early 2000's Reggaeton started fusing with Timba.

Doesn't AN time start after Bamboleo, around millenium? I would say there are timba classics, but I'm not sure if there is a classic timba era. If however I would have to name some years, they would probably be from 1987/8 - 1995/6(?).

AN was formed in 1998 but the first CD was released in 2001. Also Pupy y los que son son was formed in 2011. I don't know how one should define a classic period but I'd say at least the decade of 1989-1999 actually into the early 2000s.

I think when El Medico left you could easily say that was an end to an era. If you didn't ever get to see how completely insane Cuba was for him, it might be easy to dismiss his contributions. But holy cow -- INSANE.

I always just say 1990. I like round numbers.

I missed his era but I have heard stories. But he didn't leave until the end of the 1990s so saying 1990 was the classic age...that's kind of missing out on many of the absolutely best albums that were released. Or maybe you just missed putting the 's' on 90s in which case we are in agreement :)

Although I still think we are getting a fair amount of good stuff, although whether or not it's mainly derivative???

I haven't heard anything really fresh in quite a few years. There's was a time when even the "bad" bands were contributing to the overall musical vocabulary.

When I said 1990 I meant as a "start year" for timba. I'd say the 90s were the classic period.

1997 the best year:

Te pone la cabeza mala
Tremendo delirio
De buena fe
Con la conciencia
Exclusivo para Cuba
Marcando la distancia
Juego de manos
Concierto eurotropical
