I don't know what actually happened in the case of the alleged robbery. I haven't watched all the news reports in terms of the various testimonies given by the taxi driver or by Michel. I have seen him say he didn't do anything, but that's all.

We all know that he has had problems with drugs for many years and went through rehab in Cuba. But when he moved to Peru it seemed like a bad place for a drug addict to go in terms of being able to stay off drugs. So I'm sure the drug possession charges are correct.

It's a very sad story and to be honest I have not posted anything on Timba.com becasue I find it so tragic. But Mike finally did post some video links as well as a link to a report about the prison becasue I guess he just feels like you can't ignore something like this.

I hope that Michel is deported to Cuba. I joined a facebook group for Michel Maza

.. yeah, it is tragic. I also believe the possession charged are correct, even though the amounts are pretty high. Let's wait for more info, too bad even one day in jail in Latin America is not a cakewalk. If he however is guilty for all them charges, what a waste. One of my favourite timberos..

Well he just has an amazing gift with his singing. No one has a voice like Michel. It's so sad that he suffers from drug addiction.

ditto.

A very bizarre thread. Even when he WASN'T on drugs he was getting in trouble. It makes the amount of sympathy in here a bit strange. That in no way means I am not empathetic to drug addiction.

A great singer. (I'm listening El Loco de la Mata de Coca) as I write this. What amazes me is that one can become a drug addict on the island? I know I'm being naive but the one place in the world I wouldn't even THINK about doing drugs is Cuba. I wonder if he picked up the habit on tours outside the country?

Define drug addict? Cocaine, or specially marihuana can barely make you an addict. What I've heard it's not that hard to find a smoker in Cuba..

No sympathy for guns either from this side of the table - let's hope those charges are incorrect.

From your original post:

I guess that would fit my definition of a drug addict. I don't know anything bout this other than what you wrote.......

Huh???
There was a Cuban army general named Arnaldo Ochoa who was executed in 1989 for operating a drug smuggling ring. He was also thought to be a potential successor to the Castros so there was some talk about political house cleaning.

Once they are established, drug rings continue forever with different leaders etc.

Also, Cuba is directly in the path of the shortest route from Peru/Bolivia/Colombia to Miami so a drug ring that had good relations with the Cuban military could have a very efficient trade route.

Thats the story of cocaine.
Marihuana is grown domestically in Cuba. Many of the guys selling 'cigars' on the street are actually offering other products as well.

Drugs all over Cuba from when I started going (1995) to the last time I went (2004 or so). Yes, the groups often develop the habit on tour, but weed and crack are surprisingly easy to get in Cuba.

I guess everyone sees the word addict in their own way. I see true addiction in e.g. heroine or meth - sorry meant no disrespect here.

I did know about the Ochoa case but I guess I didn't realize the penetration in certain sectors of society. The punishments are so draconian for every little thing and vigilance is everywhere ..... I'm just surprised. I've been offered lots of things on the street: I always assumed that it wasn't real or was some other adulterated crap and I'm not interested anyway. I'm pretty naive I guess.

Sorry to be so blunt, but you're an idiot [EDIT: concerning drug addiction].

To state that cocaine can 'barely make you an addict' is certainly idiotic. Either Ville has little experience of coke users, or he sees things as he wants to see them, with little regard for reality.

Dont rally up against me. Though this is getting little bit OT, of course any substance can make you an addict per se - cigarettes, alcohol, whatever. What I don't believe, is that general use of cocaine or even larger amounts of marihuana can make you that kind of drug addict which eventually will ruin your life. Of course here is where everyone defines what amount is big and what is not, what is a lot and what is not.

Ok i agree, the word barely was idiotically used and I will take that back. Maybe it's a language issue here, could be - still I have never yet met anyone with that kind of addiction to cocaine/marihuana that turned their lives upside down. Most likely that can happen, sure - but yet these people have been able to live their lives normally. I guess I am fortunate to not seen any lives destroyed over drug (cocaine, marihuana) use - though of course here everyone has their own opinion if a life is destroyed or not.

edit. In the future, I'll promise to keep unnecessary comments to myself.

A question - you go into a salsa place and have yourself 3 drinks. Would you call yourself an alcoholic/alcohol addict? Think about it.

I thought cocaine was considered very addicting, but I certainly agree that marijuana isn't. Of course, I'm no expert; the only thing I've ever been addicted to is chocolate. ;)

In other news, it's kind of ironic that Michel Maza could get a far harsher punishment than Alex Da Silva.
