Your top 3 salsa/mambo/Latin music artists

DJ Yuca

All posters are required to do this, any lurkers are also welcome - your all time favourite salsa/mambo/Latin music artists. You can only post 3 though! It is a bit tricky.

Here's mine: Tito Puente, Héctor Lavoé, Ray Barretto.

And who's next?

I have very clear preferences - didn't have to think at all:

Ray Barretto, Tito Puente, Tito Rodriguez (in that order)

I can easily imagine a good salsa night where at least a half of the music is by these three.

Wow!... thats a tough call

Ismael Rivera

Johnny Pacheco

Tito Rodriguez

Tito Puente, Tito Rodriguez & Willie Colón; Can't imagine the Salsa/Mambo/Latin scene without those three gentlemen.

You all know my fav #1!!
1. Angel Canales
2. Cano Estremera (Love his improvisations and his voice is unique)
3. Willie Rosario
---- but there are too many fav's on my list with the exception of my #1, no one will beat him!! LOL

1. Tito Rodriguez
2. La Sonora Ponceña
3. Cheo Feliciano

Edit: I just gotta say that #3 choice was really hard for me... Luis Perico Ortiz and Richie Ray/Bobby Cruz are right there with Cheo. Tough call. So many greats and masters.

only 3 ...This is a really cruel question LOL
depending on the day i may give a different answer and certainly with only a few years listening to salsa, and havent had time yet to explore the discographies of all of the great artists.

also, for me its more about the song, or even just one given recording of a song , be it live or otherwise, the energy that the band in that moment can make or break a tune

anyway:

1. Willie Colon

a clear winner for me (including his work with Hector lavoe, Ruben blades )
not to mention his cool 1970s ganster image LOL

2. Bobby Valentin
including his work with Marvin santiago, Cano Estremera & Luisito Carrion (the tunes just make the hairs stand on my neck ,there moments i dont even want to dance, so i can focus on listening the music :P)

3. Grupo Niche
i think this group have made a deeper impact than most for salsa music right across latin america, needles to mention "Cali Pachanguero" which is more than a song really, there is just something about that song that gives it eternal life.
but they also have been able to make cutting edge salsa dura & romantica alike.. to hear them live is really the best way to hear them.

el Gran Combo should be in there too for their consistency in coming up with great songs, but it just goes without saying.
i suspect they will show up in someone elses list anyway :)

Lifetime achievement awards: (aka the top three)
1. Ray Barretto
2. Tito Puente
3. El Gran Combo

However there are other individuals and bands that I absolutely love such as:
Hector Rivera
Ray Perez (various tracks with various bands such as Los Dementes & Los Kenyas)
Cheo Feliciano while he was still doing salsa
Early Hector Lavoe (+ Willie Colon but also any band he was singing backup for such as Barretto)
The voices of Chivirico Davila and Tito Rodriguez
The Alegre All Stars (Charlie Palmieri, Kako etc...)
The current Mambo Legends Orchestra
Joe Cuba
Bobby Valentin

Puente, Cachao and Mongo.

For a long time it was Tito Puente, Ray Barretto and whoever I fancied that month. This month it's Chuito Velez. But then somehow Baretto fell off the list, since I don't have to choose just three. And If I had I'd probably go for Quantic or Mongo Santamaria.

I'm not yet familiar with all the people listed so far, but my personal favorite by a mile is Ruben Blades. I'd probably include Ruben Blades and Tito Puente among my top three, with Hector Lavoe another favorite. I also like Joe Bataan.

I like some of Marc Anthony's songs, but I recently listened to samples of several of Victor Manuelle's songs via the iTunes store and couldn't connect at all; odd, because he's currently the most popular salsa singer, isn't he?

Why only 3? I'll tell you who's always on my playlists with all other bands mixed in:

1) Grupo Niche tied with Larry Harlow

2) El Gran Combo tied with Oscar D'Leon

3) Tito Puente tied with Eddie Palmieri

My top 3 artists are: Pete Rodriguez (not El Conde), Ismael Rivera and Willie Colon.

But I´m more into special songs, often from artists which are not very famous...

A personal selection (which probably just reflects the stage I'm at in my salsa music journey):

(1) Cuco Valoy
(2) Willie Rosario
(3) Wayne Gorbea

Regards
HalfMan.

Thanks a lot Yuca you're making my brain hurt.

1) Ray Barretto
2) Right now Angel Canales
3) Tied all Big Band legends Tito Puente, Tito Rodriguez, Machito. Willie Rosario, Tommy Olivencia
