Okay..

First Friday of every month the Latin dance at Johnson's Bally Bay in Syracuse is great. No reggaeton!! None! Plus a nice mix of dances. Not something for the hardcore salsero, but great for me as I get quite a few cha cha chas. Even played a tango or two when there were many people who did AT, so the dj is a bit flexible as well...

SMAC dances in the Central New York area have been great. Haven't gone to one in quite a while. but I've never had a bad time. Great music.

If you come to Denver the best night by far is Sundays at D-Note. Very nice place that caters to the salsa dancers (not the drinking crowd).

My favourite is the Merlin in Edinburgh. Usually the second Friday and the last Sunday of the month. Spacious floor, good DJs playing 99% salsa, no drinking crowds.

In Glasgow, my favourite is Sunday afternoon at Tiger Tiger for its relaxed atmosphere. Especially recommended if you like Cuban style. I've been told Thursday nights at Havana are very good, but I don't do Thursdays... :(.

Update:
Things have changed a lot in Glasgow. Havana is gone (and sadly missed  ), and the Thursday nights have moved to another club called Favela. Two DJs take turns now, so you get either salsa dura or cuban timba depending on who's on.
The monthly Sunday social is now at Bourbon Street Bar (which I like less :( ).

The best place to salsa in Scotland is still the Merlin in Edinburgh. 8)

Sunday afternoon salsa on the beach, in the courtyard (a few steps from the sand :D ) of this posh fish & chips cafe called Dock of the Bay 8) .....

It's only open during warmer mths & can be weather-sensitive (Melbourne is famous for being 4 season in one day  )......but we LOVE it!!!!!!

Milan:

-Luna Rossa (Sunday)
-Sabor Latino (Friday)
-Tropicana (Thursday) Di Pupo!!! A mix of wonderful salsa (classic),then bachata, merengue and.....raeg! :? He must do it!

Bologna:

In the vicinity, there's Don Chischiotte. Here, once a month, all the lovers of classic salsa, come here (me too 8) ). Is a wonderful place! With lovely people and great music (son, son montuno, guajira, cha cha,etc etc)

We have three venues that have Latin nights at the moment: Santa Cruz Restaurant & Bar - 101-500 Portage Ave, Winnipeg, MB R3C 3X1 [Map] (http://ca.maps.yahoo.com/maps_result?ed=Vz_y8ep_0TqMMVrZvxXKZyQrBKY-&csz=Winnipeg%2C+MB&country=ca&new=1&name=&qty=)
The Empire Cabaret 2nd level (Palacio de la Salsa) - 436 Main Street, Winnipeg, MB R3B 1A7 [Map] (http://maps.google.com/maps?q=436%20Main%20Street%2C%20Winnipeg%2C%20MB&hl=en)
The Local Pub - 112 Market Ave, Winnipeg, MB R3B 0P4 [Map] (http://maps.google.com/maps?q=112%20Market%20Ave%2C%20Winnipeg%2C%20MB&hl=en)Santa Cruz has latin nights on Fridays and Sturdays starting around 9 PM. Sometimes there's a live Latin band playing. This is a restaurant and it has a small dance floor in the middle.

Empire is a big night club with four different rooms that has different music in each room. Salsa is played on the second floor of the club. The place is pretty big, but the dance floor is small, although, hardwood. Latin nights are on Fridays and Saturdays starting at 10 PM.

The Local Pub is my favorite. It's a huge sports lounge with hardwood floor throughout. On Saturdays they clear the tables and create a very big dance floor. This still leaves lots of lounge space so people can sit/relax on the side if they want without obstracting the dance floor. Also has kitchen that is open late so food and drinks are available any time during the night. Latin nights are on Saturdays starting at 10 PM. Starting this week there also going to be Swing music between 8 PM and 10 PM.

There are many salsa clubs here in LA, most come and go within a year. But there is one that has had salsa for 30 years and on Sun nights, becomes arguably the best salsa club in LA. If you are in LA, try to go on a Sun night and plan to stay until midnight or 1am as most of the dancers don't show up until 11pm. Tues can also be very good.

Ok people...

If you ever visit me back here in Portugal there are two salsa clubs that i'd recommend tremendously.

One is in city of Oporto called "El Sonero" - every thursdays, fridays and saturdays and in the capital Lisbon, the Kathedral of salsa in portugal "El Barrio Latino" also in these same days plus wednesdays too.

Still, there are some other places in these cities and others where you can hear and dance alllllll night long. ;) Cities like Coimbra, Leiria and others.

Feel free to contact me you you ever stop by!

San Francisco is a big tourist destination, so some of you may make it out here.

Don't miss Club Cocomo or a nightclub named Roccapulco. There is a site called www.salsacrazy.com that keeps a current listing of clubs.

Here in LA, it's possible for one to get a Salsa-fix each night of the week. But my favorite spot only has Salsa on Wednesday nights.

In western Japan I recommend El Barco in Hiroshima (there's salsa, etc on one floor and hip-hop on the next- cool if you want to cross over!) and Tropicana in Himeji. Both places are open every night, offer lessons on weeknights and have the occasional party.

Salcero 2005,
We have salsa 3 and half nights a week, the half is we get to dance for about an hour after int/advanced class on wednesdays. Yea I've been to the Marriot but most of the real salseros dont go there any more, thats why they play half booty dancing music. On thursdays there is a club called Senses that some pretty good dancers go to, that is dying off to though b/c the dj plays music in blocks so you hear nothing but salsa for 30 minutes, but then no more for like 2 hours, i still go b/c it is better than nothing. Friday nights a lot of us go to a restuarant called Salsa and they play 75% salsa music. Its a pretty good place but they are still working on getting a good floor put in. The main place in memphis is at the High Point Cafe on saturday nights. there is usually about 300 or so there and several decent dancers. They play a great mix (mostly salsa of course) and lesson from 9:30 - 10:30. The second week of september you will also catch me competing in the pre-lims for our salsa competition in October. salsamemphis.com has directions to all the clubs, let me know when your gonna be in town and i'll introduce you to everyone

If you want to Salsa in Montreal, Canada, you can do so every day of the week and you have actually several choices.
Here's the breakdown

Mondays: Club 6/49. (including free beginner class) Big dancefloor, no cover, good service.

Tuesdays: Bar-terrase Le Chaz. (during summer months) Outside terrace, small dance floor but great ambience.

Wednesdays: The Salsatheque. No cover, medium sized floor, great DJ,( just the right proportion of Salsa to Merengue and Cha-cha), good dancers and once a month, a dance show, sometimes professional, sometimes amateur.

Thursdays: Salon Daomé. $7.00 cover, big dancefloor, good dancers. They need better air conditioning (never wear your really good clothes because you will be dripping sweat within minutes.) Also, the DJ needs some new CD's

Fridays: Cactus. $7.00 cover, two small dancefloors but great ambience. The best mojito in town

Saturdays: Cubano's Club. $7.00 to $15.00 cover depending on the band. This club seems to have first pick on whatever band is visiting Montreal. Big dance floor, good dancers.

Sunday afternoon: The Old Port. Outdoor event at the waterfront. $3.00 cover, family atmosphere, cheap drinks, every week a different Montreal Salsa school puts on a show.

Sunday Night: The Salsatheque hosts the Fuego Salsero Sunday Night Salsa Party. No cover, cheap drinks, guest DJ's, almost 100% Salsa and the meeting point for some of the best salsa dancers in Montreal. Professional shows every week.

This may be Canada, but as you can see, it is a red-hot Salsa scene!

OK - Someone in another thread was asking about Salsa in London at weekends. Here are my Personal Favourites....

The Friday Club - Friday Nights at Bar Rez. 1 Nine Elms Lane - Vauxhall Tube or Bus Station. Often has live music, but door cover is a bit more on these nights. Open until 3am I think.

Salsa Republic - Saturday Nights - 3 Sats a month at Bar Rez 1 Nine Elms Lane - Vauxhall Tube or Bus Station. Free Rueda class at 9.45. On the third saturday of the month there is 'El Grande' Which takes places at the Colosseum night club - also addressed at 1 Nine Elms lane - this is a HUGE venue and an abs brilliant night out. Follow the link for confirmation of the next date. it also has some shots of the venue. {broken link removed} There are lots of different free classes before the club. In all sorts of different styles. Take your pick.

Sunday is Fiesta Havana in Hanover Square. Tube is Oxford Circus. Link to info on classes etc is here

{broken link removed}

Hope this helps - I still think the most fun to be had in London is Turnmills near Farringdon on a Tuesday Night - but that's because I'm there!

In London also dont forget Bar Salsa most nights has salsa, except Tuesday
Sound and Bar Rumba on Tuesdays {broken link removed}, www.barrumba.co.uk

On a weekend there are loads of over looked clubs in south-east London, theres Los Arrieros just by Elephant and Castle and Discoteca Chaney for Saturdays, both stay open really late too.
Also La Pollera Colora @ London Bridge - Google it for the adress as they dont have a website.
Ronnie Scotts in Soho also!

A good site for finding out what's on and where in London is www.londonsalsa.co.uk

It is fairly new and therefore the information is pretty uptodate.

There are a number of things I like about the website - it is impartial ie. has all promoters' events naturally depending on who posted what and when, and of course, by whom. That said, I think it covers quite a few options and it is clear that the webmaster has worked hard ;) (I guess that is what happens when Salsa Mafia is down, people become more productive )

If you ever go to BUCHAREST, ROMANIA, don't miss a visit at the SALSA CLUB!!!

Wonderful talented dancers, on Thursdays, Fridays and Saturdays.

No Bachata, only Salsa and Cha Cha Cha (at least when I visited it last year, it was on Thursday and for free).

Well,

I guess there aren't many other salsa situations in that town, I'm sure he mispelled Club with Trei!

Actually, it was a great surprise for me too: in Italy we have a looooooooooooooooooooooot of salsa clubs, but the average is definitely lower than the Bucharest one

Here is a breakdown of the Portland, OR salsa scene.

Tuesdays: The Barracuda (I don't know much about it - I haven't been there yet).

Wednesday: The Bosanova. This is my personal favorite. They have a good floor, a lot of good dancers show up, its not smokey, its a decent size floor, and they don't play any ragaeton (Ragaeton is sort of like rap music in spanish with some influences of other countries).

Thursdays: Fernandos Hideaway. This place is probably the most known salsa club in Portland. Like most cities - salsa clubs come and go, but Fernandos has been around a while and will probably stay around for a long time to come. However, with that being said - Fernandos is my least favorite place to dance. It can get very smokey, the dance floor is very small, the bar draws a lot of non-salseros, it has a meat market feel to it, and the guy to girl ratio is sometimes two to one. (If your a woman that may sound pretty ideal - however, if you are a man trying to find a woman to dance can be pretty tough. I quit going after I asked a girl to dance and a guy tapped me on the shoulder and said there was a line to dance with the lady and he pointed to himself and two other guys). And around midnight they play a lot of Ragaeton (almost exclusively) and some merengue.

Friday: H20. This is the newest club to start playing salsa music. This is a pretty good club. The dance floor is pretty good - but it can get sticky when people drop their drinks - which happens on other nights and the floor just isn't mopped well enough. The size of the floor is pretty good and a lot of good dancers show up. They play some Ragaeton starting around 12:30

Saturday: Aztec Willies. Good size floor. It can get smokey. A lot of people show up. However, the floor isn't all that great. It can get smokey and it has somewhat of a meat market feel to it. They start playing some Ragaeton around 1:00 am

Sunday: H20. Same venue as Friday. Its somewhat of a smaller crowd, but there are still enough people to dance and have a good time.

Malta is tiny so we have only one salsa club! :(

==> FUEGO, St Julians <==

But, then again, the atmosphere in this place never lets you down!

Let me know if you decide to visit Malta, I'd love to show you around! :)

For salsa in Dublin & Ireland, see http://www.salsapod.net/ireland including a fancy map (http://www.salsapod.net/ireland/dublin-clubs.html) of all the Dublin clubs

Is Edwin "El Diablo" Aviles DJing this night? He used to play music in Warsaw when he has lived here. His wife is still playing music in some clubs in Poland. This couple great big merits in developing the salsa scene in Warsaw.

Someone asked about London salsa in another thread so i thought I'd copy my answer here.

Hmm…Salsa in London – Now you’re talking my language! I could ask you what ‘style’ you’re after but things are such a mish mash of styles here it’s probably not worth trying to break things down. A good place to see what's on is www.londonsalsa.co.uk

OK this is a completely subjective list – it’s my fave places…others will probably disagree….

Most popular London Venue on a Monday night is Bar Salsa, 96 Charring Cross Rd in the Westend. Classes and club with Super Mario and Susannah Montero. Classes begin at 7pm, club from 9pm -2am.

However if you’re in north London my favourite by far is: The Salsa Cellar, Downstairs at the King Head, Crouch Hill, Crouch End N8. www.streetbeat.co.uk It’s North Londons’ longest running Salsa club. Non-Smoking venue (except upstairs bar) You only pay once for the evening so come early and enjoy!

Salsa Cellar at the Kings Head every Mon.
7.00 Intro, Alastair
7.30 Beginners, Jo
7.30 Imp. lev II, Alastair
8.30 Imp. lev I, Jo
8.30 Intermediate, Alastair or Guest teachers
9.30 Club with DH Felicidad and guests

Tuesday I go to the Salsa University at Turnmills nightclub Clerkenwell Rd Farringdon. www.streetbeat.co.uk. Classes begin at 6.45, and the club begins at 9.00. It usually only runs until about 11.30. Although I love it here – it’s not a busy club atmosphere – more of an after class social except for the once a month live band nights which are busier.

Turnmills Time Table every Tue.
6.45 Intro to Salsa, Salsa Rapido
6.45 Beginners, Salsa Rapido
7.45 Improvers, Amanda
7.45 Intermediate, David Barzey
7.45 Intermediate, Alastair

Wednesday is my night off – but the busiest place in central London is again Bar Salsa. This time classes are run by Joe and his Latin Collective. They start at 7.00 and run until 9.20 when the club starts.

Thursday is The Cuban in Stables Market Camden (www.camdensalsa.co.uk). I love this venue, food is excellent. You can eat before you dance. 6-8 is happy hour and the cocktails are amazing here. It regularly wins awards for them. Classes begin at 7.45 and last until about 10.pm when the club starts. There is loads of space for the classes as they use the martial arts studio next door. Speciality here is Rueda with brilliant instructor Moe Flex (www.moeflexdance.com). You can’t help but love this venue.

Camden Salsa TimeTable every Thurs.

7.45 Improvers, Alastair

7.45 Weekly Workshops, Guest teacher

Friday and Saturday for me is Bar Rez / Salsa Republic. 1 Nine Elms Lane in Vauxhall. Fridays often has live music, and the Saturday monthly huge club nights at the Colosseum nightclub next door are not to be missed. Details can be found at www.simplysalsauk.co.uk/Events/Events.htm

Also on Saturdays there is The Latin Palace – which isn’t as grand looking as it sounds. I’ve not been, but friends have had a good time there. www.latinpalace.co.uk

Sundays for me used to be Fiesta Havana – but it’s just lost the venue and moved to Digress bar 10 Beak Street London. I haven’t been along yet. Details are here www.salsa-uk.com/Saturdaynightfever.htm Classes run 6 - 8pm with a club afterwards.

See my updated post on later page. Briefly latin palace is only friday now and Bar Rez is only Saturday. SOS is a better sunday venue details in my other post....

My favorite dance is Salsa. But I like Hustle as a “vital hybrid” of salsa, swing, R’n’R and so on. It depends on music: dance to salsa, or dance to swing, or dance to disco.

Have you ever heard about universal competitions salsa+swing+hustle ?
Like ballroom competitions (waltz+cha-cha-cha+ foxtrot+ jive,..) ?

Here in Edmonton, Alberta, Canada, you can dance every day of the week except Sunday and Monday.

Tuesdays-Saturday: Azucar Latin NiteClub, which has a very heavy population of latinos. They do free lessons at around 9pmish, I think it's supposed to start somewhere around 8 though. The dancing is ok, the floor is huge and they always have live music. Although they tend to can the salsa close to midnight and it deteriorates into Reggaeton rather annoyingly from then on.

Tuesday: Funky Buddha on Whyte ave, $3 cover. Cuban style, smallish crowd and very small floor, although the dancing is fun and the DJ is awesome.

Thursday: The Bank, free cover, free lesson at 9:30, LA style. Very sleek and modern atmosphere.
also Thurs: On The Rocks, free cover, Cuban style with awesome floor, big and fast. Same DJ as Tues at the Buddha. Bigger crowd. Lots of fun. Lots of Cubans there.

Friday: Roma's, with $5 tango lessons at 7pm, and then salsa plays later in the evening.
also Friday: Dante's, witha summer salsa competition. They've decorated it with beds inside and there's an outdoor dance floor too. Miami style I think, and LA. I hear it's awesome there. I don't know yet, I haven't been, but I'm going tomorrow night.

Select Saturdays: Salsa socials at Alex Taylor School's gym on Jasper Ave downtown. Advertised at www.e-townsalsa.com If the url is wrong I'll update soon. These are nice cuz you pay cover, but there's no booze, only bottled water and juice, and everyone is there to dance.

So far my favorite night is Thursday. But I think I'm enjoying the social scene more and more.

So if you come to Edmonton, there it is!

Hi Cale,

Sorry for not posting earlier -- which means you missed the Merlin last night, which is (in my opinion) the best salsa night in Scotland -- sorry!

For information on salsa in Scotland, see www.salsaholics.org and also sign up to the Salsalink mailing list (joining instructions on the above website).

---------

Edinburgh weekly club venues
Mondays - Medina, Lothian Street
-- very popular, salsa 10pm till midnight then world music till 3am

Thursdays, Fridays & Saturdays - Cuba Norte, Morrison Street
-- Thursday's probably the best night for dancing. On Friday and Saturday the tiny dancefloor can be taken over by the party crowd, but there have been some quality nights too so do try.

[EDIT]
Sundays - La Tasca, South Charlotte Street
-- not a busy night but good atmosphere.

There are also places where you can dance salsa on other nights in Edinburgh (after classes). See www.salsaholics.org for info.

Edinburgh monthlies
Salsa Friday, The Merlin, Morningside Road, every 2nd Friday of month
Salsa Sunday, also at The Merlin, last Sunday of month
Salsa Saturday, Cafe Royal, West Register Street, 3rd Saturday of month
-- These are organised by the same promoters. Mix of LA, NY and Cuban styles. Salsa Friday is the best salsa night in Scotland. Large floor, good DJs, no reggaeton, lots of good dancers from cities across Scotland, very friendly. Salsa Sunday is smaller than Friday but has been very consistently good this year. Salsa Saturday's a recent start and haven't quite got established yet but hopefully it will improve!

Salsa Lounge, Cuba Norte, 1st Sunday of month
-- More mambo oriented night. Not a big turnout but tends to attract good dancers.

-------------

Glasgow weekly salsa venues
Thursday - Arta, Albion Street
Friday or Saturday - Favela, John Street
-- Arta is weekly. For Favela nights, check www.salsaholics.org to see which night is salsa. Both are predominantly Cuban style so expect a lot of timba and some reggaeton.

If you want LA style in Glasgow, try Bacchus, Glassford Street, on Mondays and Steak & Cherry, Sauchiehall Street, on Wednesdays. There is dancing after LA style classes.

Glasgow monthlies
Sunday Social, Favela, first Sunday of month
-- Again mainly Cuban style.

I think there are more monthlies in Glasgow but I haven't been to any of them -- maybe Azzey can help?

-----------

Last but not the least, a twice-a-year event which is THE biggest salsa night in Scotland...

Salsa Ball, Corn Exchange, Newmarket Road, Edinburgh.
This year's summer ball is on Saturday 16 September. Don't miss it!
Strictly advance tickets only -- you can buy them from http://www.salsasuave.co.uk/

In miami bongos is a real nice place they only play salsa outside and its a nice place to eat. Inside they play just about everything and it gets really packed at night because they move the tables to make room to dance.

I hear Cafe mystic is also a great place to go never been there though I have been to cafe crystal they do play like 70 percent salsa I would say and it doesnt get to crowded but I usually leave before 12 am.

Im going to check out some other places and ill update the post later

If anyone ever makes their way to Essex (UK) Salsachillout with Terry and Yolande is great :D

Can't remember where they are on Monday.
I go to the Marconi club on Tuesdays, there is also The Mill in Rayleigh.
Wednesday is in Billericay at the Belvedere.
Thursday is in Standford Le Hope at the Wooden Hut.

Classes start at about 8:50pm for an hour and depending on the venue there is 1 or 2 hours social dancing afterwards. Prices are £6.00 for members and £6.50 for non-members.

There are also monthly parties on Fridays and Saturdays which are great fun often with guest teachers like Marchant and Miriam, Lee and Shelley, Moe Flex etc.

Is anyone familiar with the salsa scene in New Mexico, particularly Albuquerque? I imagine the particular Hispanic demographic there can't be counted on to be into it, so how much goes on there in the way of salsa dancing and live salsa bands? (I'm playing with thoughts of relocation today.)

This is copied from another post. It is for a specific week in Jan 2007 however all nights are weekly except for The Colosseum El Grande Party. There is a weekly party at the same location which only uses part of the venue. It has a good reputation and the timings are the same.

OK here goes. I’ll list stuff in London for every day that week where there is something appropriate. I will mention whether is is a personal favourite or simply a popular venue / night. Some of the places I really like aren’t necessarily the busiest or most high profile venues. I will also mention the predominantly danced styles at the venue.

CA=Casino
RU = Rueda
CBL1 = ‘Slot’ style salsa on1. In London this does not necessarily equate to very flashy LA style.
CBL2= ‘Slot’ style salsa on 2. Sometimes proper ET2 sometimes On1 moves danced on2. There aren’t any pure ET2 venues in London as far as I’m aware.

Sun 21 – Leon Rose and Tamambo SOS. Salsa on Sunday. CBL1, CBL2

Location:
Mary Ward House
5 Tavistock Place
London
WC1H 9SN

Closest tube: Russell Square
Map Link: http://www.multimap.com/map/browse.cgi?pc=WC1H9SN

Starts 6.30 (Can be a bit later sometimes!)
Classes for an hour and then club from about 7.30 to 11pm.
Small bar on site selling soft drinks. I can’t remember there being any alcohol.
The best CBL style dancers all go to SOS, lots of teachers go for a dance on their night off. It’s just a great big hall not a club – so sound system is not brilliant. This venue is ALL about the dancing. Floor is good.

Review Link:http://www.londonsalsa.co.uk/clubReviews.php?clubNightID=9

Monday 22 – Super Mario and Susana Montero @ Bar Salsa. CBL1

Location :
96 Charing Cross Road
London
WC2H 0JG

Closest Tube: Leicester Square / Tottenham Court Road
Map Link:http://www.multimap.com/map/browse.cgi?pc=WC2H0JG

Starts 7pm
2 hours of classes and then club until late.
This is probably the most popular salsa club night in London. It does get hot and crowded because of this. Bar Salsa has a prime West End location. The downside of this is that sometimes you get asked to dance by pervy non dancing tourists. I’d recommend doing a class and dancing with the people you meet in order to filter them out! Floor is good.
Review Link: http://www.londonsalsa.co.uk/clubReviews.php?clubNightID=1

Tuesday 23 – Turnmills NightClub Farringdon. CA, RU, CBL1, CBL2

Location:
63b Clerkenwell Rd
London
EC1M 5PT

Closest Tube: Farringdon
Map Link: http://www.multimap.com/map/browse.cgi?pc=EC1M5PT

Starts 6.45 (sometimes a little late)
Beginners 6.45 – 7.45
Improvers 7.45 – 8.45
Intermediate 7.45 – 8.45
Club from 8.45 to about 11.30 sometimes a bit later. Depends if there is a band on.

This is not a massively well known club, however it is one that both myself and AndrewD go to. Dance level is very mixed. The club encourages beginners to stay on after the classes and have a try social dancing so you get the full range. One of the teachers is a big Rueda fan so most people know at least basic Rueda. Most weeks another teacher brings a bunch of his on2 students down to the FREE club for practice, so you can get an on2 dance. However CBL1 is the standard in London and this club is no exception. Floor is pretty good, air con great.

Review Link: http://www.londonsalsa.co.uk/clubReviews.php?clubNightID=4

There is a more popular night on a Tuesday called Latino Sound, but I’ve never been. It is in Leicester Square. You can find some details at this link.

http://www.londonsalsa.co.uk/clubReviews.php?clubNightID=167

Wednesday 24 – Metro Latina @ Bar Salsa - CBL1

Location:
96 Charing Cross Road
London
WC2H 0JG

Closest Tube: Leicester Square / Tottenham Court Road
Map Link: http://www.multimap.com/map/browse.cgi?pc=WC2H0JG

Starts 7.20 – to late ( I think)

Another well established and well attended club night. Probably the second largest in London. Same pros and cons as bar salsa on a Monday. The night is run by Joe Davids of The Latin Collective. Fast becoming one of the largest promoters in London.

Review Link: http://www.londonsalsa.co.uk/clubReviews.php?clubNightID=6

Also worth a mention is Clockwork. Details are on the link below but I’ve never been to the venue. Long running and popular venue CBL1.

http://www.londonsalsa.co.uk/clubNight.php?clubNightID=62

Thursday 25 – The Cuban in Camden. CA, RU, (CBL1 – a bit)

Location:
Stables Market
23 Chalk Farm Rd.
London
NW1 8AH

Closest Tube: Camden Town or Chalk Farm
Map Link: http://www.multimap.com/map/browse.cgi?pc=NW18AH

Starts 7.45 - 1.5 hours classes CA and RU. Then club until 12.15 or so.

This is another lesser known venue that I sometimes go to. Most of my friends go weekly but they aren’t married and have more time than me! Very friendly bunch of people, good cocktails and decent food. It has terrible air con though and gets hot. Floor is not brilliant do NOT wear suede soles here you’ll wreck them. Good atmosphere. Feels a bit like being on holiday. Dance level is mixed but very strong modern Cuban style.

Review Link: http://www.londonsalsa.co.uk/clubReviews.php?clubNightID=125

There isn’t really anywhere else special to dance CBL style on a Thursday though if you were in town you could go to Bar Salsa. Not as busy as Monday / Wednesday, but OK. I didn’t like the teachers, but I know people who do. It’s all personal preference I guess.

http://www.londonsalsa.co.uk/clubNight.php?clubNightID=18

Friday 26 – Mambocity@ Ealing Town Hall – CBL1, CBL2

Friday is a TERRIBLE night in central London crammed with the after work crowd. There isn’t any salsa in the centre as such. The venue which is most popular and has a great reputation is to be found in Ealing in West London which might be quite hard for you to get to. I’ll add it anyway in case anyone else is interested:

Location:
New Broadway
Uxbridge Road, Ealing
London
W5 2BY

Closest Tube / Train: Ealing Broadway
Map Link: http://www.multimap.com/map/browse.cgi?pc=W52BY

Starts 8.30. 1 hour classes then club until late.

Has a good reputation. I have been to Mambocity’s other venues, but this one is a bit far for me. Generally I hear there are a good standard of dancers. No CA or RU danced as far as I know.

Reviews: http://www.londonsalsa.co.uk/clubReviews.php?clubNightID=12

Sat 27 – El Grande at the Colosseum – CBL1, CBL2, RU, CA

Location:
1 Nine Ems Lane
Vauxhall.
SW8 5NQ

Closest Tube: Vauxhall
Map link: http://www.multimap.com/map/browse.cgi?pc=SW85NQ%20

Lesson at 9.45, club til 3.30

Huge monthly party club with three rooms. All styles danced. Music is varied. Like anywhere some months are better than others. Floor is OK rather than excellent. You CANNOT bring any kind of drink into this club so don’t try. Plus there is no free tap water you have to buy. Generally considered to be the best and biggest monthly party in London.

Emoyeno,

Could you rate those clubs how much salsa they play (%) compared to other stuff and who plays no or only very little reggeatón.
I have been to Shot's and I liked it, the music was very loud, though.
Puerto Rico has my favorite salsa and my favorite dancers!
THANKS!

All these places feature 100% salsa with the exception of the Hotels

I guess outside of PR, Reggaeton is mixed with salsa & merengue & Bachata. Here is totally different.

Just an update
Palo Once has been closed they will be relocating by the end of June.

El Criollo on fridays is now playing live
salsa bands with merengue intervals. It gets pretty crowded on fridays since Palo Once is now closed.

Thursdays you could try Wessex House, which is about 1 minute from Clapham Junction train station. Not really central London but only ten minutes by train from Waterloo and there is a train every 3 minutes. Class starts 7.30pm (salsa time so no rush if you're still on the train at 7.30) £8. Good wooden floor. Soft drinks and alcohol at very reasonable prices and free water. There is a cloakroom but most people seem to leave their belongings in the seating areas so it must be a low-crime area :). I went last Thursday and it was packed by 11pm. Aircon not great so bring a spare shirt/top for busy nights ;)

Hey guys

Hope somebody in t' North can help me out with this one!

I'll be in staying in York for the next few days until Tuesday for work reasons. But i figured that commitments permitting I might be able to squeeze in a cheeky salsa class while I'm staying up there, maybe Sunday or Monday night.

Does anybody know about classes in the area (My guess is that someone like Sweavo might have something to say about that ;) )? I've heard good things about Encuentro Latino but I've only danced On1 as opposed to On2!

Any advice about classes in the area would be greatly appreciated!

Thanks!

Seems a lot of the above are in the USA so next time I'm there I have my hit list, but I dance in the South East of England and recommend as follows:

Mon 8pm www.salsafactory.co.uk (Ware, Hertfordshire) - great club, big dance floor, excellent advanced classes with guest teachers. Also offer Argentine Tango at 6:45pm beforehand.

Wed 8pm www.harlowsalsa.com (Harlow, Essex) - nice and friendly but not very advanced - good for beginners / intermediate

Thurs 8pm http://www.somethingaboutsalsa.com/ (Hertford, Hertfordshire) - run by Leon Rose including teachers Frank Santos and Inaki Fernandez - just got started this year but seems to be picking up a good following.

Maybe see you there...!

Mondays:
Clarendon Grill in Arlington, VA for on1/on2; $5 cover
7-8 beginner on1 lesson; 8-9 intermediate on1 lesson; 9- DJs
Comments: usually very crowded (some people, including me, don't go much anymore due to getting kicked, hit, and stepped on so much); decent food; friendly crowd, with many beginners and also adv. dancers.

Lucky Bar in NW DC - I haven't been, but it is free and popular w/ beginners; LB recently replaced a very warped floor.

Rendezvous in Rockville, MD recently started Rueda lessons on this night. It is a studio with nice wood floors, mirrors, water cooler, friendly people.

Tuesdays:
Barking Dog in Bethesda, MD for on1/on2; $10 w/lesson, $5 without
7-8 beginner on1 lesson; 8-9 intermediate on1 lesson; 9-12 DJs
Comments: occasionally has performances and guest instructors. Popular with beginners as well as more advanced dancers.

Geisha Lounge in DC - a fairly new venue. I haven't been yet.

Wednesdays/Thursdays/Fridays/Saturdays:
Habana Village in NW DC; $10 w/lesson, free without (at least for women)
7:30-9:30 beginner and intermediate on1 (two groups); DJ or band after
Comments: wood floor, friendly crowd (size varies, as does m/f ratio). I basically learned to salsa here and am a big fan of Leon Harris, who teaches on Thursdays (and Fridays) and Victor (Wednesdays/Saturdays).

Wednesdays:
Zanzibar in SW DC; $5 cover includes 1/2 hour cha-cha or beg. on2 lesson
Comments: crowd can vary greatly in size, ability, etc. They've switched between dancing on the first and/or second floor several times, and sometimes (as now) offer a free buffet between 6-7. Often holds special events. I've only been here a few times.

Cabanas in NW DC
on1 lesson, sometimes bachata
Comments: in Georgetown near the water, so may be convenient for visitors. I've had fun dancing here the few times I've been.

Thursdays/Fridays/Saturdays:
Cecilia's in Arlington, VA; $10-15 cover
Salsa or Rueda lessons followed by open dancing w/DJ or band
Comments: smoking is allowed and definitely noticeable. The bands are very good. Cecilia Villalobos recently started teaching the salsa lessons here on Thursdays and Saturdays; I've heard she's very good, and plan to try soon. SAOCO teaches Rueda on Fridays and is also very good.

Fridays:
Los Arrieros in Silver Spring, MD - fairly new venue
Charges for lesson, free after. I haven't been yet, but I will soon.

Saturdays:
Ceviche in Silver Spring, MD - relatively new venue
I believe there are salsa and zouk lessons, not sure about cover

Studios, such as ClaveKazi and the DC Dance Collective, often have socials (which include a lesson) on the weekends too.

There are a bunch of other places that I either wouldn't recommend or I haven't been to yet, but I think I've listed most of the places that are very popular and/or centrally located or near Metro.

Another poster mentioned South Beach and Lulu's, which have closed. As for Divinos and Juste/Cafe Peju, they may not be as into salsa now. I hope the above is helpful, but check a DC salsa website for more info.

If you are popping by downunder Australia and are looking for nice places to salsa check out this new website.

According to their website www.Thesalsalounge.com is the leading FREE independent and impartial web site about the salsa dance scene.

It is not affiliated with any event organiser, club, promoter or dance instructor.

Their aim is to provide positive, inclusive support for everyone in Sydney and Australia's Latin music and dance community. They are a group of volunteers.

They have some free videos instructional and links to free salsa and latin music.

From their website they say that they try to provide the most current and up-to-date coverage and information on events, performances, dance classes and workshops - for people new to Latin music and dance, for out-of-town visitors, and for local salsa dance addicts (You know who you are! And yes we mean YOU!)

Places get recommended by other dancers, and you can find a place by location, floor and price, even those FREE ones! Just what we needed!

Their website is www.thesalsalounge.com

I like it. :D

Anyways, if anyone is interested in the Australian salsa scene send me a buzz. We definitely like to meet good dancers from around the world or just make new friends. :D [/b]

Best night in Cardiff is Thursday in Bar Risa next to the Millennium Stadium (very near the train station). Classes 8-10 ('LA-style') and dancing from 10 until after midnight. You get most of the best dancers in Cardiff here and visitors from Bristol and sometimes further. Most dancers here are cross-body style though some can dance Cuban style and rueda. Good, varied music.

Saturday night from around 11 until 2 (don't get there too early) in La Tasca is mixed latin music and attracts good dancers from Cardiff and elsewhere as well as non-dancing revellers. Cuban (including Spanish and Latin American dancers) as well as cross-body style. Can be crowded: best avoided during big match nights and in the runup to Christmas.

O'Neills on Monday is popular with a Cuban teacher and has the advantage that free dancing starts early at just after 9pm. Not as many good dancers here as at Bar Risa.

These are the main nights I go to that include a decent amount of time for free dancing. More info in my blog (see below).

In Chicago, the best club to go to is The Green Dolphin! For many years it has been the bastion of salsa music and dance.

However, eventually, greed got to the promoter and he increased the cover charge and frankly, wasn't very nice or even cordial with the customers. There was not a sense of appreciation. There was only a sense that they wanted your money.

So, that eventual greed caused the crowd the begin to shrink. The owners, for their part, got rid of that promoter and brought in a promoter that has a very successful Friday and Saturday night at the same club. However, that promoter's crowd is more of a club dance (hip-hop, rap, reggaetón) crowd. Needless to say, the salseros stopped supporting it. This opened the door for another club to open up on Tuesday nights.

The other club, however, is absolutely HUGE and beautiful! It is so huge that even with many people there, it always looks sparsely populated. There was a lot of buzz in Chicago about this elegant club, but that elegance has started to become its undoing. The overhead for the club is ridiculous and it reflects in the drink prices; which are truly astronomical. So now, salseros are looking for another venue.

With the situation just right, the Green Dolphin brought in a new promoter, lowered its cover charge to just $3 and added several fantastic drink specials. Now, the Green Dolphin has begun to reclaim its original status of the best salsa venue in Chicago.

Check it out on Tuesday at 2200 N. Ashland. The doors open at 6:30pm with the José Valdez Latin Jazz Trio.

It truly is a HOT night!

Houston, Texas

Tuesday
Tropicana
Ladies Night
Guys $5
Best regular night of the week to salsa dance. The crowd is 90% salsa dancers. It is lightly packed, but not so much that there isn't room to dance.

Wednesday
Sullivan's Steakhouse
$5
Supported by some regular salsa dancers
Elvia's

Thursday
Skybar
Ladies night
Guys pay $10!!!!
Top of a 10 story office building looking at the Houston skyline. Great band. Very nice venue with classy people but can get full of drinking non-dancers (read: sticky dance floor) later on. It also gets very tight eventually. You can dance on the carpet though. Despite all of the negatives, this is a very popular place to dance on Thursdays.

Friday
Tropicana
They play a lot of reggaeton Fridays, but they play more salsa earlier on in the night after the free class.
Plaza 59 is back!?
This used to be the place to go on Friday, but it closed. It's back I think. But is it good? It was a very classy club when it was open before. You will find the good music here.
Rumba Club
I think.. I haven't been there for awhile but for awhile it was pretty good for the people who live nearby. Kind of ghetto though.

Saturday
Tropicana
Another good night for Salsa at Tropicana, but doesn't compare to Tuesday.

Thursday, Friday, Saturday
Taco Milagro on Kirby and Westheimer
I don't know why people continuously support this place, but they do. I guess because it's free and it's a very casual environment with a lot of space for people to chat outside. Salsa dancers can bring their non-salsa dancing friends and be assured that everybody will have fun. It's a haven for the 20-30 crowd. Kind of a meat market. But the dance floor is small, sticky, and crowded, and the music is rarely all that good. Still, it's very popular. Just not for the top dancers. 1 or 2 good dancers sometimes show up, but usually those nights most dancers go to real clubs.

Monthly socials
Melody Club
Every first Saturday of the month.
Usually DJ Gonzo!!
My favorite local DJ.
Best venue of the month.
90% salsa dancers and 99% salsa music!

Sonya's World of Dance
Every last Sunday of the month
Sometimes DJ Gonzo.
Always good music.
This one starts at I think 6:30 and ends at 10:30. Something like that.
99% salsa music! 95% salsa dancers. You ask for a dance, they will probably say yes.

There are some new venues coming and going all the time. I only listed the ones that have been consistent over the last few years. There are some more lesser ones too. Maybe I'll add them later on.

I can not speak to lucky bar since i've never been, but I agree that many many dancers go to Calrendon Grill on Monday nights. I've not done the lessons (too difficult to get there so early) but I've heard they are quite social and the instructor is very energetic. A lot of dancers also seemd to 'pass by' for at least a short time & it was a friendly social scene. A bit crowded but that evaporated as it got later.

For those trying to dance in Minneapolis/St. Paul, Babalu's has closed.... apparently a victim of the bad economy.

Babalu was in trouble for about 2 years, I was surprised they kept their liquor license as long as they did. I wonder who is next.

Sounds like good news on Front Cafe, I like going to clubs in NE.
