Suggestion: Artitsts Corner

Just a suggestion here would like to see opinions.
Maybe there was a thread titled Artists Corner, but I havent looked hard enough for it.

Artists/Musicians Corner, maybe divide it into sections.
- History
- New Artists
- New Releases

Just a suggestion, I find it very helpful, because we have members that are soooo educated and really into their favorite artists that could contribute.

What do you guys think?

But like I always say, the more I know, the more I realize I know very little.

On that line, I just "discovered" - Johnny Colon.
Merecumbe is his famous song but OMG, how I love all his songs. He reminds me a bit of Jimmy Sabater.

From Wikipedia: (because I know so little about him)
Johnny Colon (born in New York City) is an American salsa musician, leader of the Johnny Colon Orchestra and founder of the East Harlem Music School, also known as a major contributor to the boogaloo sound of the 1960s.
Colon was born in New York City to parents of Puerto Rican heritage. He wrote most of the Orchestra's tunes, sings, plays percussion, piano and trombone, and first found success in the world of salsa with his 1967 debut album, Boogaloo Blues.[1][2] He released five albums over the period 1967-72, and in 1968 founded the East Harlem Music School, which still exists. His latest jazz album, "Keeping It Real" features the American pop songbook .[2]

Discography:
  • Boogaloo Blues (Cotique Records, 1967)
  • Boogaloo '67(Cotique, 1967)
  • Move Over(Cotique, 1968)
  • Portrait of Johnny(Cotique, 1971)
  • Hot! Hot! Hot!: Caliente de Vicio(Cotique, 1972)
  • Tierra Va a Temblar(Cotique, 1975)
  • Johnny Colon's Disco Hits: Soul & Latin(Cotique, 1976)
  • Keeping it Real (2008)

EMOYENO, Johnny Colon is still actively performing in NY. A friend of mine just played with him a few weeks ago. If I hear of one of his gigs I will send you a PM.

Again, I am suggesting an Artist Corner -section.
Clearly there are people who have learned a lot from the thread "what I'm listening to.." there should be a section about the artists. I always like to know a little bit of a history behind the music, otherwise how would you understand why a certain artist has this perticular sound and so forth.

Artists/Musicians Corner, maybe divide it into sections.
- History
- New Artists
- New Releases

suggestion into johnny colon off-topic?
please experts spend more time to write perfect wikipedia/information pages?
yeah, well...
i think threads here with artist=thread title are good enough

I'm definitely for it. I know a lot of us wish CD's were more in depth with their liner notes. I believe your idea of an "artist corner" to be extremely helpful in getting to know artists humble beginnings , successes , and downfalls. It cant be that difficult to make happen. This forum is called "Salsa Forums".

reality is:
1.) there are Wikipedia pages that provide good information about many Salsa artists like
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Rubén_Blades
it's easier to write a posting in a forum than to enter information in wikipedia but it does not take very long to get familiar with the Wikipedia interface. The result is better structured, enforces more quality from the writer and is better for the information takers.
2.) there are threads here like
http://www.salsaforums.com/threads/orquesta-colon.9946/
what's better if they are in a subforum? if the subforum grows you have to use the search engine anyway so you can just do it right now. folders and categories are somehow dated anyway, tags and searching are more flexible and effective.
3.) http://www.salsaforums.com/threads/salsa-in-barcelona.5970/page-3#post-214726
posting #44 and following
question, question, question... and people who could answer or provide information just don't care.

problem 3 is not solved with an artist corner. But still, there are many very good Wikipedia pages even though nobody paid the contributors. It's surprising. I haven't contributed to any page but I'm thankful and recently donated a lot of money to Wikipedia.

so based on that... there might as well be no Salsa Forums...
we should all just blog and post on wikipedia
people should not even post on "name that tune"
people should just do some searches (which they DONT) instead of making up "new" threads with the same subjects.
wikipedia pages really? - so you dont want to contribute to Salsaforums let alone let anyone else contribute

I am with Emoyeno. An artist's corner will provide good and relevant information for those who cherish the music and hence the people who produce it. It will be very utile for the true dancer (who should be a true music fan) and also for collectors and DJs, who are always looking for new and interesting finds.

So, come on moderators let's give it a go. :)

Well, Emoyeno has asked me before about having an artist corner here, but while I can understand your and her interest, we'll have to consider various aspects, ie. forum organisation, traffic per section, etc. in our decision. So far I (as moderator) don't see any reason to establish an extra section for the discussion artists and their bio- and discography compared to keeping the current threads combined with a sticky post as reference to them.

You can certainly ask my moderator colleagues for their opinion, but I don't think that with the current low traffic spread around various threads, they are going to agree about creating new section rather then my suggested approach.

I love Johnny Colon! My favorite song of his (so far) is Echala pa'ca, Merecumbe is also one of my all time favorites. It's on my next big purchase list. Cause usually I try to buy several albums of the same artits for my collection.

I think it would be a good idea to a have an artist section. I am constantly wanting to discover new artits, and this would be an amazing tool. I think I suggested something like this a while ago but for albums.

Thanks!!

Salsa Forums and no artists corner- yet everyone wants to know "the name of that tune" "who's version is it from" "more songs from this or that artist" -- it just doesnt make sense not to have an artist corner. wasnt enough trouble switching servers?? duuhh

There are people here who actually know something about the artists - that wont post on wikipedia!! Im all for wikipedia on wikipedia - this is Salsa Forums. Withouth the artist there is no salsa period!!

Pardon, but you can't compare the decision by our tech team (incl. the admins) to switch the forum software (and not the server itself) from vbulletin to xenforo with the decision by us moderators to allow a new section. As I've told you in PM and above again, there are different criteria and especially with regards to a new section, we'll have to consider as one aspect the amount of traffic. And right now all those threads that you and others started about artists are very low traffic, having a few posts and then being left dormant. And considering that we already got sections like "Websites of Interest" or "Member Reviews" which are very low traffic, I'm not willing to add another such section without seeing more traffic for a potential new section.

So again, why not start using the current threads more and really talk about the artists, their bio- and discography, etc. to show me and my colleagues the traffic that justifies having all those threads in a new section rather then having just a sticky post pointing to all of them?
