For about 8 months now. I take advanced classes and help teach beginners, but I guess I consider myself an 'advanced-beginner' because there is so much still for me to learn. Now, I get the 'shakes' when I don't go dancing for a couple of days.

Yes, I can remember wearing your shoes. I'll bet you're having a lot of fun these days.

I began to dance salsa early summer 2004. I put between 1-5 years, but I would say that I have danced salsa for maybe 6 months? I'll explain below.
Started by taking a 1 semester class spring 2003 in swing at Cornell University, didn't do much after that, and then started doing salsa in the late summer/autumn of the same year. When I did start taking classes I did group ones witha vengeance. I took group classes from 2 teachers, so I was doing anywhere from 2-3 latin classes every week. Then I started doing rueda and was taking one class from 2 teachers to make that 2 classes a week. There was a point reached when I realized that soemthing was missing. I was learning moves, but dancing is not about that, really, so I kind of weaned myself off it. Then May of this year I achieved my 2004 goal of joining an advanced rueda group, and I also began to dance salsa. Dancing isn't about moves. It is the trinity of life's expression - music, partner and you.
A lot of people like how I move my feet now since I spent so much time doing the basic, but now I need to work on letting my upper body be more expressive. Another subject for discussion?

Sagitta, did you mean 2004? :)
I started somewhere around 2000 with a few hiatus moments in between.

Yes Peach! Just corrected myself. I am thinking of 2005 now. 2004 is almost gone, you know. :)

I went to my first ever salsa class in January 2003, so counting from that point, it's close to 2 years now, but I didn't start dancing socially until September 2003, and before that I went to classes only intermittently. So I think it's fair to say I've been dancing salsa for (almost) 15 months.

I first was introduced to dancing at a New Year's Eve party on December 31, 1993, so it is easy for me to count how long I have been dancing. :D

:D Two and a half years in Salsa
with a group of people who have fire
in their bellies.
There has been an unspoken code but amongst
my fellow salseros,
if one of us gets tired and doesn't want
to go out that night, the other people
inspire you to get to that club, that class, that
private or you get left behind.
Also all my life I've been dancing R&B and hip hop.

Hi ArtsySalsera! Welcome. Yes, it certainly helps if you have a good group of friends that keep you motivated and give you a little nudge when you feel like giving up or feeling blue. :)

its been awhile... going on 8 about to be 9 months :)
I started in the summer of 2003 at the amusement park in Gothenburg, Sweden. They have free outdoor salsa classes during the summer on a real dance floor with roof. :D After classes it is social dancing and I try to be there every week.

Started January 2003, so that's 3.5 years in time but had a 6 month break when I was forced to move where the only option was to go dancing with complete beginners once a week and so that set me back a bit. I usually say just over 3 years.
It's not so much the time that's important as much as having the opportunity for great instruction and regular dancing with people of your level or higher. The later bit gets harder and harder to find the better you get.

I have been dancing salsa for just over 3 months. So, I have got to be one of the newest dancers in these forums. I take an intermediate class as well as a beginner class once a week. I go to clubs at least twice a week and take their classes their as well.
I also practice everyday with some salsa videos I have.
I used to teach adults figure drawing. When my drawing students would ask me how to get better, I would tell them to practice - can't sit back and wait for yourself to better.
Thanks to everyone for the good advice you have been giving. More questions are coming...
