I just wanted to create a thread where people can talk about their weekends - what they are planning and what they actually did. And if you are someone who works during the weekend and your days off are during the week - feel free to post about you are planning to do on your days off.

My past weekend went really well. I went salsa dancing Thursday night, dragged myself into work on Friday, went dancing on Friday night, went mountain biking saturday during the day, went salsa dancing on saturday night and then sunday I spent most of my time hanging out at a friend's barbeque. The weatherman called for rain all weekend - but he was wrong :) It was sunny and beautiful all weekend up until around 7:30 sunday night!!

Well this weekend I look forward to salsa dancing and putting together some of the things I learned in class during the week. I'll probably go to the beach with some friends and try and learn to surf Lol..Don't have the best balance so we'll see how that goes.

Hmm..Beach and dancing Salsa...now if only I could put those together. :D

Actually..two weeks ago they had a Salsa event at the Beach Pier..Not quite the same..but nice view and a great night.

This weekend I'll be in Blackpool, England, for the Blackpool Dance Festival doing photography and watching the best ballroom comp in the world... and the next weekend I'll be travelling back to San Diego! (Blackpool runs Friday-Friday)

Tony, not that this is a surfing forum, but . . .

Ask your friends to show you how to stand up on the board before you go. That is one of the more difficult aspects of learning how to ride when you are starting out. After they show you, you can practice before you go. That way, its one less thing for you to worry about. If you try and learn how to stand up the same day that they are teaching you everything else, it can be difficult, because there is a lot to learn, and when you're out on the waves and you see one coming you'll probably end up forgetting your form and just trying to stand up and then falling in the water - even if you have great balance you still need proper form in standing up.

Good luck - and post back on how it goes!!!

Hehe...Well I don't have any friends who can surf that live nearby. One of my friends has had a surfboard for over 2 years and has yet to use it. So we're basically gonna try and wing it and try not to hurt ourselves!

Last weekend -- no salsa (shock! horror!).

Next weekend:
For Friday I have to choose between a live gig (great band but not a dance venue. Probably too crowded to dance, and few leaders to dance with anyway) and a regular club (okay DJ, tiny club, dancefloor often taken over by clueless drunks, but there will be some regular faces to dance with). :?

Sunday's my fave social but I can be there only for an hour or so  . There are going to be some Cuban-style workshops before that, so I may attend those too...

This coming up weekend I had planned a three day trip to hood river, Oregon with a friend, to do some kiteboarding, snowboarding and mountain biking. However, our weekend got rained out :( totally sucks!

Also, a lot of the local salser@s are away for a salsa congress - so the clubs won't be very good. So what to do, what to do with my weekend? Hhhmmm - hard to say :?:

Tony_salvi
05-25-2006, 03:57 AM
I hate when that happens man..seems like a lot of the clubs seem bare during any local or close congress.

Wish I had the time and money to make it to one of those

Hey Terremoto Wasup,

So, last night I went out dancing at Outlaws. I was really surprised because the place was absolutely packed. I thought it would be dead with so many people gone to the LA congress.

Anyway, maybe this bodes well for us Friday night at H2O.

Lolita - hope you have fun shopping!

My weekend started last night. I went out to Andrea's Cha Cha club. Its a small club and can get pretty smokey - so I haven't gone in about a year. However, friends of mine kept telling me that a lot of people show up on Thursday nights and there is a live cuban band. So I figured I had to give it a shot - I called up a couple of friends to see if they wanted to join me and I found one lady who said she would go.

The band was awesome!!! The band's name was "Cubaneo" Oh man - they played with so much heart and feeling and they were just getting into and the crowd could just feel the vibration, it was awesome!!! However, there weren't very many dancers there that were above a beginner level. And floor craft - didn't exist. The floor was crowded - but people should not have been running into me as much as they should have. People were just not aware of their surroundings. One guy lead a girl into a spin and then into some type of a cuddle move and he almost ended up cuddling with me - I was like, hey buddy, I don't want to get to know you that well :D And then this one lady was trying to cross the floor and she literally shoved me out of her way - I'm serious. SHe physically shoved me - unbelievable, I've never been shoved like that on a dance floor - totally rude. But I danced most of the night with the one lady that agreed to meet me at the club and we had a great time - mostly because the band was just so good.

As for the rest of my weekend - I'm not sure. I'm hoping the sun will come out so maybe I could do something outdoors.

Work has been pretty hectic so I am posting a little bit past the weekend. But my weekend went well. I went to bed early friday - no dancing - because I wanted to get up early so I could spend the whole day mountain biking! I had a great day. And then the next day I was hoping for wind so I could go kiteboarding, but there was no wind, but it wasn't rainy, so I spent another day mountain biking - My legs were pretty sore monday morning but I had a great time. I'm hoping that this weekend we will get some sun and wind!! And saturday night I went to a house party and they had some salsa dancing which was all good!

I had a great weekend!!! On Friday I left a little early and went to the gym. Then I went out dancing - it was an OK night, I was just really tired. Then Saturday I went mountain biking - it was a rough ride, - It was a 15 mile loop around a lake and at 7.5 miles I crashed on my bicycle. I was fine, but I messed up my gears, so I had 7.5 more miles to go before I could get back to my car and my bike wasn't working right. I tried fixing it, but I could only get a handful of gears to work. So I had to just tough it out. I got home and then immediately took my bike to the shop - I bent a bracket that cost $10 to fix - so I repaired my bike so I would be ready to ride again on Sunday. so then sunday I spent the day at the beach and got way too much sun - I kiteboarded and hung out with friends and had a couple of drinks - it was a good day. Then I went out dancing on sunday - I had a great night. And monday I had off from work, so I just hung out - i wanted to go back to the beach, but I had gotten too much sun from the day before.

And now I'm back at work - looking forward to tomorrow night so that I can go out dancing again!!

AAAAAAAAANyways; for this week end i went to Alexandria, to go to the opening of la piste alexandria and it was amazinggggg, but it was toooooooooo crowded, the club is an open place on the beach, salsa music all over, most of the salser@s from cairo were there, and every one was happy.
then the next morning ( actually afternoon cuz we returned to the apartement after aclubbing at 7:00 am  ) we went to the beach, relaxed, had a very nice tan ( we is almost all of my close frinds ) :D and we saw the some salser@s too so we danced on the beach!

i got to know some really nice guys..i am glad

we cruised in Alex, its a wonderfull city, and i mean it WONDERFULL.

Last weekend was good. Took some good group lessons and went to a party Saturday and Social on Sunday. I had to leave town Sunday night, which was unfortunate because after the Social there is a free club with a really nice wood floor and everyone from the social goes there as well as other dancers.

Looking forward even more to this weekend because of my first ever private lesson, group classes, free concert with Sonora Poncena, Joe Bataan, Grupo Latin Vibe, Tato Torres' Yerba Buena & the Camacho Brothers, and then a Social at the South Street Seaport with a good DJ and a decent number of mambo dancers.

Sunday there is the Jimmy Anton social, but I will probably be worn out by then. A lot of the performers will be at the Congress in PR so it should be more laid back than usual. :D

Heh, my weekends are now being planned weeks in advance... scary but true.

This weekend I've got a couple of hours of tai chi on Saturady afternoon (might be helping teach on Saturday morning, not asked my instructor yet). Saturday night I will be dancing the night away.

I *could* go scuba diving on Sunday, but a) still have a bit of a cold, b) it's going to be like 7 degrees C in the water, and I think my drysuit has a leak. So I will probably end up going for a run (eep, half marathon a week this sunday and my training has been VERY lacking :S), and salsa class in the afternoon, probably followed by Sunday lunch if all goes well.

Possibly try and get in a film on Friday night (although some friends were talking about a Brazilian night in Bristol, so that might be good).

No plans for the weekend other than shopping (why can't my OH do this during the week whilst I'm at work? - not that I'm bitter and twisted, you understand) and probably some sort of family time out with our son. So no salsa but the little one makes the pill so much easier to swallow!

No dancing on Saturday - swedish massage in the morning and off to a cinema in the afternoon, then just chill (well that's the plan anyway, but who knows -- the salsa club is only 10 minutes' walk away ). Swimming and some more dancing on Sunday.

9 piece band, 4 in the brass section + 3 singers. Great sound but not as good a night as I've had previously at one of his concerts.

A quiet weekend -- nothing special on other than the regular nights at my local salsa club. Went there on Thursday and last night. Will go again tomorrow night but not sure if I'll go tonight -- might go and see a film instead. The place is tiny and always gets too busy, and I dance terribly when there are too many bodies bouncing around as I tense up trying to avoid collisions. Sunday nights are quieter and, if good leads turn up, can be quite nice.

I'm looking forward to some non-stop action next week at the MamboCity congress in London :D! I'm only doing Fri and Sat nights, but there will be a local monthly back in Edinburgh, which will hopefully be good too.

I had an absolutely wonderful weekend! It didn't really go as planned - but still great!

Friday night I went to the ususal salsa spot - and to my horror - there was no salsa - the club was empty and a jazz band was playing :( (OK so my weekend didn't start off on the right foot - but it got better).

So a group of friends went out for a drink and then were going to head to a different salsa spot. We ended up drinking and laughing most of the night and then realized it was pretty late and then we all went home.

Saturday I went snowboarding!! It had snowed hard the night before and it was snowing all day!! About eight inches of fresh snow in total in late April!! I also went up with two of my snowboarding buddies. It was actually the first time all year we had gone up together. One of them was in a car accident and this was the first time he was healthy enough to go up to the mountain. It was great riding with them!!

Then Saturday night I went to the usual salsa spot - the mambo lounge. However, I only stayed for an hour because I had to meet up with a friend later that night. It was kind of cool pakcing all the dances in one hour. There were a lot of ladies there I wanted to dance with and had to actively work to make sure I danced with each of them. It was definately one salsa packed hour.

So then I met up with a friend of mine from when I was in college. We stayed in a dorm room accross from eachother. We met when I was 19 (I am 30 now). We have kept in loose contact with eachother ever since. It was really great reconnecting with him. He moved to Eugene, OR (1.5 hour drive south from Portland). So we hung out and laughed and really had a good time. Its interesting the number of turns that life has taken over the last 11 years.

Then on sunday I pretty much just relaxed - cleaned up my place - practiced some isolations - went to the park and hung out.

That was my weekend :) Now its Monday around 11:00 AM and I'm about to head off to lunch in an hour or so.

Terre sounds like a good weekend.

Mine didn't quite go as planned - no salsa :(

Friday straight after work I jumped on the train to my parents. Had dinner with them then the whole family watched a DVD which was nice.

Saturday I was up early to drive to tai chi training, which was most of the day, and very very good. Saturday evening I call up my friends near my parents, two of them were practically at the cinema, a good 45min drive away, and two were 2+ hours away visiting friends... argh! So another night in with the parents - it was too late to make it to the salsa 50mins away - I'd have missed the classes, and I'm terrible at asking people to dance if I haven't warmed up in a class situation.

Sunday was a day of training kung fu, which again was most of the day (10-4:30), most of it was way way way beyond my level, but picked up some really useful tips. Dinner with my parents, train home, finished up the weekend sipping a single malt scotch I was given for my birthday :)

This weekend should be great!! Tonight we have a live salsa concert and we have the opening night of a new salsa venue. I'm thinking about hitting both of them.

Saturday during the day looks like it will be a good day for kiteboarding :) It will be my first time out this season!

Saturday night I'll go to the Mambo lounge - its my favorite place for salsa dancing in Portland.

Sunday looks like a good day for snowboarding (just as long as the rain stays away :) ) we will see!!

Just back from our local social at The Engine Shed in Wetherby. Socials there have been going on since way before I learned to dance and it's probably better attended than ever, now. It's nice to know some venues last. Off to bed just as soon as I've checked over the dance threads. :)

Good weekend :D.

On Friday and Saturday I attended MamboCity congress. This was my second time there and, like the last time, I enjoyed it. I like the setup there, with a nice open area connecting the two rooms. I stayed mostly in the main room then went to the after party downstairs (best part of the night, I think).

I couldn't afford three nights in a single room :( so left on Sunday. Had an hour's snooze then went to Salsa Sunday at the Merlin in Edinburgh. Merlin nights had been quiet recently, but this night turned out to be a very good one so I was glad I didn't miss it.

It was a pretty intense salsa weekend for me, especially since I'm a fairly recent addict.

Saturday, it was a 3-hour workshop on smoother partnering and musicality. That night, my wife and I went dancing at Mambo Lounge. Sunday, we went to the last-Sunday-of-the-month social, which was preceded by a beginning class on Cuban salsa. So now I know 3 styles that I need to improve at. :?

I had a wonderful weekend! Friday night I decided to go to an opening night of a new salsa venue. The City Sports Grill or something like that. I had a pretty good time just because there were a handful of good dancers. However, I did not like the venue at all!! Due to its location (downtown) it pulls in and relies upon a heavy drinking crowd that likes regaeton - so it played a lot of regaeton and a lot of merenge and some cumbia. The floor was very small - it was smokey - the floor had cracks in it. And over all - I didn't like the atmosphere - the non-salser@s outnumbered the salser@s by like three two one.

So then Saturday I went kiteboarding. It was my first time out this season!! I was just waiting for the wind to pick up!! It felt great to be on my board again.

Saturday night went to the mambo lounge (didn't run in to Snowdancers - however, I probably saw him but just didn't know it).

Sunday I went snowboarding. Generally there is about a month or two of overlap between kiteboarding and snowboarding season - its always awesome to do both. However, the snow was extremely slushy - like mashed potatos.

One more thing - I had the most bizarre dance I have ever had last Friday night.

Here's how it went down: I went up to a friend of mine on Friday night and I asked him if he knew who knew how to dance (there were a lot of non dancers there - see my post above this one). So then this one lady comes up and says hello to my friend and then my friend basically says to me that I should go and dancer with her :?

OK - so I start to lead her and see that she is a beginner - no big deal. Then she starts like standing in place and shaking - and I'm like what??? SHe says - "Its OK, I'm just releasing energy" - OK, whatever, I guess I can deal with that. And then as I'm trying to turn her I feel her starting to resist me - very strongly - she was a very strong woman. And then she started trying to lead me  but I couldn't figure out what she was doing - and then she basically over powered me and started trying to crank me through some turns :? She hurt my shoulders. SO then I broke contact - started shining and then I tried starting to try and lead her again. Then she said she was done dancing and walked off (that was the best part of the dance).

I went up to my friend after the dance - and asked him "Dude, what the *@%^?" HE just laughed - he watched us dancing and though it was funny. I told him Payback is coming!

Hola,

Salsa packed weekend.

Salsa tonight in a cafe in Bath. Always a packed packed venue, where bumping into each other is the norm, but it has a really nice atmostphere because it is so small. Calls for lots of small dancing, but that's cool, I can work on styling and musical interpretation.

Tomorrow over in Bristol (40mins drive) there are a couple of afternoon classes with Marchant Birch, followed a few hours later by a party with another class from Marchant and dancing until 2am. Hopefully the venue is nice - not been to this one before.

Sunday I might do the intermediate and improvers classes in Bath. The intermediate is always worth going to as it's such low numbers the attention is really good, not to mention the quality of the teaching.

So that leaves Saturday and Sunday morning for chores, and Sunday after salsa to spend some time chilling out with a work collegue who is visiting Bath for a week! (Although he's done dance classes, that was with his wife before his wedding, I don't think he really fancies coming out tonight... shame!).

I had a good weekend. Friday night I hung out with a non-salsa friend at a local bar - just had some drinks. Saturday I helped clean up a local beach site from lots of fallen trees - very tough work - we had to cut up a lot of trees and toss them in a bonfire - the bonfire was cool. I'm really freaking sore.

Then saturday night I went out dancing and sunday I mostly just hung out and took care of stuff around the house.

Going for a week to Sharm El Sheikh for diving :D Just on my own :)

Lolita - don't suppose you know if there are any hotels with salsa in that area? :P Unfortunately I will be diving 5 days, and will have built up too much no-fly-time to fly to Cairo to say hello on my last day of my holiday (and 6 hours on the coach is NOT fun).

Wooo, so excited, but so much to do... still need to sort out travel to/from the airport this end, scuba kit, money etc! Crazy, but at least I've been to this place before, and know how it all works!

Saturday night taught a basic on1 class at a wedding and stayed for the live band. 'Twas ace! Turned out 80% of the people there were musicians. They had zero trouble with the timing. However after the class proper, when they'd been social dancing for a bit, one guy asked me how many basics would you typically do before changing, e.g. to the side basic. First time I've had a question like that!

Sunday morning I did an hour's Contemporary Dance and an hour's Street at free taster classes put on as part of dance week York. I'm still feeling the effects! My body hasn't moved like that for about 20 years...

Hoping to go again tonight, although Friday (and Saturday) nights at this venue are usually too insanely mobbed, often with drinking party crowds. It doesn't help that the floor is tiny (it feels busy when there are only 10 couples dancing crossbody).

Had a nice long walk in a park with hubby in the afternoon, then went to Glasgow to meet up with his friends for a Greek feast :D. Then we searched for salsa... The first club hubby and I went to had a DJ playing to an empty floor (most regulars at this club must have been at the Cuban congress in Wales). Felt sorry for the DJ but there was no point in staying there, so went to another place. The floor was absolutely horrible, but at least I had some dances before we had to rush off to get our bus back to Edinburgh.

I tried to go out dancing friday night - went to two different venues but didn't even dance one song  there was no one out. I had forgotten there was a big concert in town at a different venue and by the time I remembered (actually someone told me) it was too late to go there.

Saturday night also started out very slow. I was actually pretty frustrated - not very many people were at the club when I showed up. However, they all started trickeling in around 11:00 to 11:30. So it turned out to be a pretty good night!! I had a couple of really good dances with one of my favorite portland dancers :D not too many guys there to dance with so she even asked me a couple of times :D :D such a wonderful compliment.

Other than salsa - not much happened on my weekend. I am normally out kiteboarding, snowboarding, or mountain biking - however, not much of that is going on. Jambo's Salsa Fix night on Friday, Prodigal on Saturday, SOS on Sunday. Woo hoo!

If you see a little dancing sunflower, ask for a dance! :D

Wow, you've got some energy!!

I hope you have a good one too :D Will try my best to get it off to a good start for you ;)

We're aiming to get there about 8:30pm, so I reckon I'll make it by 10:40! See you there!

   Yay!!! See ya later

BTW If you do get there for 8.30, you'll probably be the first there

I'm hoping to spend my weekend skiing. Still waiting on snow - maybe tonight :D

 Supposed to be several new inches falling tonight.

I was at SkiBowl last Saturday, and it wasn't bad at all.

Tonight's party is hubby's last gig in Scotland - the removal people are coming take away his CDs (and other things) next week.

Friday night was great - I hope hubby will find gigs in Japan... he's such a brilliant DJ. I couldn't stop dancing

Went out on on Saturday night- attendance was low, but I still had fun despite.
Someone showed me how to CHa-cha! I've never done that before- so it was fun, and I had several fun dances with nice people :D
I still have a feeling of contentment about it

Friday night - SOBs in NYC. Live band. ok music...a little too crowded...left early. Think I mentioned this somewhere else, but my night was made by giving this girl who didn't know how to dance two consecutive dances as I knew it was her birthday. She rated the dance as her "first", over prom night and other dances that she had been to - her words: "This is the first time I have danced".

Saturday night. Family sort of dance in New Jersey. Did some bachata and cha cha cha. Some hustle and then just moves and people really did not know how to dance. Some nice compliments.

I looked for a cha-cha-cha love thread but didn't see one..
Watching/Listening before, I was very ambivalent towards it-
But.. oh is it up on the list to learn now!

I love the swooping/tip-toe-ness! 8) :D

Cool! Another cha-cha lover. Will you be at Mambo Lounge this weekend?

I started this weekend early, going to salsa class on Thursday, then dancing afterwards until past midnight. Friday, I went snowboarding, then went dancing afterwards. And Saturday night, I'm going dancing again; and then maybe snowboarding again on Monday.

It's a good thing I'm pretty old so I don't have to worry so much about wearing myself out. :) (It's like how you're more willing to abuse an old car than a brand-new one.)
