What they term hand shines refer simply to hand flicks, drop hand catches, and other tricks like that. not so much hand styling as you might expect. I think that this DVD is more useful for men, since ladies will learn their responses mainly on the dance floor. There are so many variations that this is something best responded to rather than have stored in a lady's mind 8)
That being said I remember that it was a really good DVD, as an introduction to what was possible. Probably has something of value to performers, although I suggest that you create your variations too.
In my estimation quite worth the money if you're new to this side of salsa.
