If anyone's interested, I've made up a Google Map with clubs and socials to go to the week leading up to the Congress this September. Later, I'll add studios whose classes I'd like to attend.

That's great idea Snowdancer ! Gives a good overview.

Am too lazy to figure it out but how do you do it? I can do one similar for SF in the SF thread.

1. Go to Google Maps (maps.google.com)
2. Click on 'My Maps'
3. Then 'Create new map'
4. To add a spot, look it up in the search box.
5. Click on the spot that was found, and a 'bubble' should pop up.
6. In the bubble is a 'Save to My Maps' choice.
7. Somewhere, if I recall, is a 'Save' button for when you're done.

This is brilliant. I'll add this thread to the cities sticky.

This is awesome! I posted it over on the DC Salsa Meetup forum as a lot of DC area people will be up in NYC for the congress. Thanks, SnowDancer!

Are any classes in unsafe areas?

Someone said they attended yamulee classes but it was a few years ago and thought the area was a bit dodgy.

How about the location of the santorico classes?

Thanks

Oh wow, this an awesome idea. I'd like to put some of these together myself! I can't believe how simple it is too. Do you know if there's a simple way to embed one of these maps into a website?

santo rico is about four blocks from the 4 train and while it is a bit dodgy now, there is a fire house, police station and a church in the way and honestly, it's more in your head. Maybe I'm used to it at this point.

Yamulee is supposedly across the street from the train station, so I wouldn't imagine it being that big of a deal.

just stay alert, walk tall, and be aware of your surroundings.

Act if you feel uncomfortable, ( meaning if you see a couple of people just standing in the sidewalk at 2am, switch to the sidewalk in the other side of the street,i learned the hard way, what can happen). if there is some dodgy character in your subway car, change to the next),

Dont worry about yamulee, the studio is right next to the station, but keep your eyes open anywise.

Santo Rico, try to find other people to walk back to the station at the end of the class, as it will make you feel, and it is more secure.

worst come to worst, get into a deli and call us :) we will come to get you.

So far, I feel safer in NY than I did in San Francisco recently, or even when I go out dancing in Portland. There are always people around and about, no matter what time it is.

Hi Salsa Forums!
I'm new and I was browsing around and found this thread. Thank you SnowDancer for creating the google map of where to dance in NYC. I'm actually spending a week in NYC & NJ beginning tomorrow and was wondering if anything has changed since you last posted? It's been 5 years since I danced in NYC so I'm way out of the loop. Any leads will be great!

I live in San Francisco, so if you need any updated information about the SF Bay Area Salsa Scene, I'm happy to provide any information you need.

Thanks a bunch!

Welcome to Salsa Forums. My map is a bit old now, so be sure to check the accuracy. Clubs seem to come and go really fast in NY!

There are several long standing clubs in Manhattan with live Salsa bands and dancing that I don't see on this list... LQ, Columbus 72, Julia De Burgos Cultural Center, Leather Lounge, Copacabana, SOB's, BB Kings... not to mention clubs in Queens (Club Chango, Club Ex, La Boom, La Kantera...). Perhaps some dancers would like the option of dancing to live music.

Yes, that would be great! I've never been to any of those.

Yes, that would be great! I've never been to any of those.I realize that many (most?) dancers that frequent this forum probably prefer the socials and studios and some of the clubs I mentioned may not provide the best dancing experience for them. Clubs like BB Kings and SOB's attract many tourists and unexperienced Salsa dancers trying it out for the first time, and the world famous Copacabana can be hit or miss. Julia De Burgos and Leather Lounge in Harlem attract a seasoned Boricua crowd, folks that grew up dancing in the living room of the apartment and later in the many active NYC Salsa nightclubs of the 70's and 80's. The clubs I mentioned in Queens mainly cater to the young Colombian and other South American communities in NYC -- you will hardly hear any English spoken in those clubs and they dance a very different style than most are probably used to.

But... I think it's important to support clubs with live music and experience something different now and then. Without living breathing musicians there would be no Salsa to dance to. Period. After all, they are also the ones that record the CD's you love to listen to and dance to.

Happy dancing!

Well said, I always like to mix it up to support other venues. If you want to dance bring a crew with you to the venue.
