Well I really like: Angel Canales (but friends who are hardcore Lavoe fans don't really like him) Joe Cuba, and recently through this forum Brooklyn Sounds...and alot alot more! But it really depends on my mood!

I too absolutely adore Angel Canales. He's is best known for Puerto Rico's Second "National Anthem" (Lejos De Ti)
I don't really have one favorite but many.

If someone were going to put me on and island and force me to pick only one salsa artist/band to dance to (and there would have to be people to dance with on the island), I would pick El Gran Combo.
If I were disabled, unable to dance, and stuck on a similar island where I could only have one salsa artist/band to listen to, I'd probably go with Cheo Feliciano (although maybe I'd go with Willie Colon, if I could include all his collaborations).
(Don't you love these scenarios?)
I didn't grow up with this stuff, but I love Hector Lavoe and Angel Canales both. I think Lavoe's style is less specialized, so to speak, than Canales'. Lavoe seems to cover a broader range of emotion.

I tend to have favourite songs rather than favourite bands/singers, but I confess I'm currently in love with the voice of one of the singers of LA 33 (the one that sings even-numbered tracks  -- of which La Pantera Mambo is the best known of course, but he sounds absolutely delicious in Soledad and La Vida Se Pasa A Mil too).

This is how I started to find out who I really liked. I liked songs, so I figured I would find out who sung them. Then I noticed that I would specifically like the songs sung by particular singers. When I finally realized that the voice needed a band for me to really enjoy the song, which led to buying more and more music for specific bands.
The last case I can remember was from the song Magdalena. I figured out that Miguel Quintana was the driving voice. Then the band was simply too hot to handle, so I asked my collectors friends, and they led me to Ernie Agosto's La Conspiracion. What a hot band! Every CD I own by them is way great!
Now that I know a bit more about musicans, I tend to blindly buy CDs based on the musician line-up, regardless of band. That has thus far worked for me. I haven't bought one bad CD in about 2 years.
