Hey everyone I finally got around to checking out Shaka Brown's shine's video. Overall I thought it was a great video. My favorite section was the body isolations. he spends about ten minutes or so going over shoulder rolls, torso movements, hip movements, and leg movements. And then he has about nine different shines. Each one is a series of different patterns and he incorporates a lot of the body isolations into his shines and explains how you can add them in. I like the shines because they incorporate the full body (I have other videos that focus mostly on footwork and don't spend much time on the upper body). So, in summary- I recommend the video.

Hey thanks for the review Terremoto, it's very useful.

I've been looking for something that covers body isolations from a guy's perspective.

I might well have a look at this - do you have a link for it?

Here is Shaka's main website.

I noticed that your location is London - if you do a google search for "Shaka brown salsa" you will see some sights selling his videos in London (which may save you on some shipping and handling).

hey terremoto
was wondering if shaka browns' dvds are On1 or On2? If its On2, will it be easy to change the moves/shines for On1?
cheers,
Sac

His advanced turn pattern dvd is taught both on1 & on2. The others are on2.

Thanx One Cent for jumping in and answering the question - I let a friend borrow my DVD and I couldn't remember.

thanks guys for ur answers...got hold of the dvds. since its taught on2, im thinking of replace the counts from 5 to 1. so when shaka counts 5, im on1
is this acceptable?any other ways of converting on2 moves to on1?
also, the shines looks bit complicated for me, specially the heel snap, body rolls, triple spins etc...how long does it take to master these shines? what u guys think?

Converting turn patterns from on2 to on1: not a big deal. Converting shines isn't quite as straightforward. Going from on1 to on2 generally isn't a huge thing.... But sometimes going the other way can't be done without killing the feel of the shine...

The 5 count when dancing on2 (on ladies' timing) corresponds to the 3 count on1, so putting the on1 "1" in place of the on2 "5" doesn't work. (someone please check me on that)... Being an on2 native who now lives and teaches in a part of the US where people don't catch on to mambo very well, I've developed a few conversion tricks, but it would be a wordy post.

The easiest way to deal with the conversion problem is to do your shines as they are on2, then switch back to on1 for partnerwork... I think that's far better than mangling a shine to force on1. But I might be completely out of my mind...

And as far as "complicated" ones, I'm of the opinion that no shine or body movement is difficult; it's just a matter of loading them your muscle memory and making them second nature...

guess doing the shines as it is should not be a problem.. you mentioned that the 5 count(on2) corresponds to 3 count(on1) for turn patters...is this true? what approach should i take then?i thought lady turns on 1 count(On2) and 5 count(On1)... is this correct? someone please help me...
thanks

ladies do start spinning on 1 when dancing on2 and on 5 when dancing on1, but what I said about the on2 "5" corresponding to the on1 "3" was in reference to where your feet are...
