I'm from Italy!
I started to dance salsa last summer. With some friends, we decided to take lessons and asked a friend to teach us!
at first, I tought It would have been easy because I studied classic and jazz dance but....
I found that my studies have nothing to share with couple-dancing!
It's very hard for me not to listen only to myself but to my partner's controls!!!
(I always try to lead and conduct! ouch!!)

Hi Folk!!!
I'm a on2 Salsero from Milan, Italy, although I prefer to start stepping forward on counts 1-2, as many Italians do.
I like Salsa Classic Themes and looking forward to share titles with all of you.
By the way: one of my favourite bands from the 60's/70's (=golden age) is from Venezuela: Los Dementes de Ray Pérez.
This is a quite unknown band, if you click "Ray Perez" in google, you get nothing or so. They are an unknown DIAMOND in the world of Salsa Dura.
Amongst my favourite, also Richie Ray, Joe Cuba, Joey Pastrana as well as many "niche" Latin Soul bands.
Special greetings to my nephew La Celia!

Hi everyone!
I found the welcome thread!
My name is Nikka and I am a salsera from Montreal, Canada.
I am half Greek-half Japanese and my husband is Peruvian-Canadian. He introduced me to salsa about a year and a half ago and I have taken lessons ever since, I love learning it so much.
Although I love to dance salsa, I also enjoy other forms of dancing, from Argentinian Tango to Lindy-Hop Swing, as well as Cha-cha, bachata and Merengue.
I discovered this forums by accident, I was looking for some article about salsa on the net, I cliked on a link without reading it and here I am. I have only been around for two days but I love it here! Everyone is polite, informative and the threads are all interesting.

Hehe - only just found the welcome thread myself.
I'm an English guy, been dancing Salsa (well, any dancing) for about a year and a half now. I love Bachata and can do a passable merengue and chacha also :)
Took me almost a year to really get into the scene, doing only one class a week. Somehow or other I got volunteered into regularly coaching a couple of beginner classes - now I'm dancing most every night of the week, and wouldn't change it for the world (well, a little more sleep would be nice, but hey ho, priorities and all...)
So nice to find a forum like this - I remember one quote from someone in a recent thread.
People ask me why I spend so much time on these forums - because you people understand me!!!
Ah, it feels like I've found a new home :D

Hey Everyone:
Just logging onto SF after lurking for about a week. I'm checking in from the Baltimore/DC area and have been dancin' (On1) about a year and a half. Living between two decent salsa cities has me up and down I-95 for both work and dance. :car:
I really like the advice many of you salseros and salseras dole out here, and I hope to benefit from all your collective experience. In addition to Salsa, I love bachata and cha cha cha as well. Wish the clubs would mix in a bit more during a typical night. :?
I've already found how welcome the salsa community is in my area, and I seems that way here online as well. Obviously, salsa attracts the best people!

It's been a while since this thread was lasted used, but I'ld like to bring it up for various issues:
First, welcome to all the latest new members, who joined our wonderful forum and hopefully bring all their experience and opinion into our discussion around the various topics.
This also leads me to the second issue, which is the organization of the forum. Surely everbody has found this section as mostly we all want to talk about the dance itself. But I would also encourage all new and current members, who haven't done so, to explore the other section as well. You'll find specific sections to talk about salsa (and other latin music), to watch various videoclips or talk about anything not directly salsa related.
Also I'ld like to this opportunity to point out to any member who hasn't seen it yet, that we've got a gender indicator option. This can be used to help your fellow members on this board give you better advice by easily recognize if you're mostly likely to be a leader or follower when it comes to dancing.
And finally I like to draw the attention of everybody, who hasn't seen it before, to our wonderful Salsa Forums Awards (http://www.salsaforums.com/showthread.php?t=16475) from last year and the current ongoing Nominations for the Fifth Annual SalsaForums Awards 2011 (http://www.salsaforums.com/showthread.php?t=18534)

Hi SF-ers!
I've been lurking on this forum for far too long and I've finally been shamed into posting by my friend tallpaul who recently mistook my identity in a different thread! I've never felt I have anything to contribute compared to the masters who frequent this board, but after 5 years of dancing I suppose I must have a bit of experience. It's amazing that after all this time I feel more like a beginner than I did when I was a beginner!!!
So here's my salsa CV: I started learning while at university in Southampton, UK and was immediately hooked. I had a spell in Somerville, MA but was too scared to venture further than my local venue in Davis Square. However I learnt a lot about social dancing from people with much more sabor than I had been used to! I've spent three very enjoyable years in Belfast improving my Cuban/LA/on2/whatever and have recently got a new job in Watford and am very keen to find out what NW London has to offer.
My new years resolution is to continue to contribute to these boards and I hope I can inpart even a small amount of wisdom on here, from which I have gained so much in the past.

Welcome to SF Elanie! Yes, you were here for quite a while stalking us but I wonder how could you not post for about 2 years? :P
I dont think that NW London can offer much, you've got to come to center. At least to Tufnell park. My ex gf used to live in Radlett and she could stay in SOS till 22:15. Check trains to Watford.
Btw, for some weird reason I feel quite uncomfortable when I notice that someone from London (or around) lurking on the forum, learn our secrets and then suddenly come up  I feel safer to meet the member on the board and then dance :)

hello everyone,
I am new to this site. I found it thanks to google.
As far as my dancing, I grew up dancing in the Caribbean and had rythm, but I need to get my timing and confidence back up to par. I am starting to take Salsa more seriously and re-discovering my Merengue and Bachata.
I'll ask a lot of questions. I am currently reading the oldies but goodies thread. Lots of good stuff there.
I am also looking to find a partner that I can grow with. I am currently in Albany NY,so that's not trivial. I tried Craigslist, we'll see how it goes. I have gone to a couple of the Latin social nights. It's fun, but I felt inadequate...as in not fully up to par, so I'm working to get my groove back.
Cheers,
Sonny

Hi Sonny and welcome to the forums!
I recommend looking for a group class that changes partners during the class. That way you can dance with a variety of partners and maybe you will meet someone with a compatible outlook who you can practice with outside of class time.
And please do come back here and ask questions! The forum needs wide-eyed newbloods to post to keep it alive :-)

That is an excellent idea. My only concern is being the odd man out. I am not shy or anything, but I've seen what it's like to be the person who is not paired up in a group class and it's awkward :(. Nevertheless, everyone is nice and as we rotate, it works itself out anyway.
